Find Out How!
Taking the CDL test will be much easier after going through our practice CDL tests here online. This is part B of the HAZMAT Endorsement portion of the CDL written practice exam. These questions are very similar to the ones you'll find on the actual CDL written test you'll be taking to get your CDL license. Follow along with the test questions below and read through the explanations that follow each CDL test question to get some better insights into the CDL exam and the trucking industry itself.

1. You must have placards for explosives, poison gas or flammables exceeding...

A 10 pounds
B 10 cartons
C 100 pounds
D Any amount

⊞ Answer:

D Any amount

Make sure you know this because you can be sure it will be on the test.

2. If you are hauling hazardous materials and have ___ tires on your vehicle, you must stop and check them every time you park.

A dual
B radial
C bias
D treaded

⊞ Answer:

A dual

Dual tires, which all tractor trailers have, can overheat and catch fire if one is flat or if they are rubbing together.

3. A vehicle placarded for Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 explosives...

A may never be left unattended under any condition
B may be left unattended in a safe haven
C may never be parked on private property
D may not be parked on the cosignee's property

⊞ Answer:

B may be left unattended in a safe haven

Hopefully you will never have to haul explosives, but if you do your company or the shipper will hopefully be able to tell you where the safe havens are along your route.

4. If you are required to stop at railroad crossings, you must...

A Stop 15 to 50 feet before the nearest rail
B Remember to never shift gears while crossing tracks
C Proceed only when you are sure no train is coming
D All of the above

⊞ Answer:

D All of the above

There is a good chance this question will be on the test also.

5. Some hazardous materials may not be loaded together with other hazardous materials. The prohibited combinations are listed in the...

A Hazardous Materials Table
B Hazardous Waste Manifest
C Segregation and Separation Chart
D List of Hazardous Materials and Reportable Quantities

⊞ Answer:

C Segregation and Separation Chart

Wow, these questions are hard. Know the different charts and tables and what they are used for.

6. The shipping papers for hazardous materials can be found...

A In a pouch on the driver's door
B In clear view, within reach while driving
C On the driver's seat when out of the vehicle
D Any of the above locations

⊞ Answer:

D Any of the above locations

This is another question they like to ask. It's very important you are aware of exactly where the paperwork should be left in case of an emergency. The fire department and HAZMAT teams are instructed where to look for the paperwork if they can get to it to find out what the load contains.

7. Which of the following statements about loading and unloading cargo tanks is false?

A The person in attendance must be aware of the danger
B The person in attendance must be within 50 ft. of the tanker
C The person attending the tanker must have a clear view of it
D The person in attendance must be authorized and able to move the vehicle

⊞ Answer:

B The person in attendance must be within 50 ft. of the tanker

Being within 50 ft of the tanker is not always going to be the best safety procedure to follow, but you will have to follow the other rules listed above.

8. The floor liner for explosives may not...

A Contain steel or iron
B Contain nails or screws
C Contain cracks or holes
D Contain any of the above

⊞ Answer:

D Contain any of the above

They don't want anything in the trailer that can puncture any of the containers or cause a spark.

9. It is acceptable to use a placard with the word DANGEROUS if...

A You load less than 5000 pounds of specified materials at one place
B You have two or more specified materials which total more than 1000 lbs.
C both A & B above
D either A or B above

⊞ Answer:

C both A & B above

Wow, these are tough. You may have to know this for the test, but fortunately the shippers will have this information when you pick up the load. At least that's the law.

10. A "transport index" relates to products that are...

A Meant for human consumption
B Liquid
C Radioactive
D Overweight

⊞ Answer:

C Radioactive

The list of rules pertaining to radioactive materials is longer than the US tax code.

11. On the Hazardous Materials Table, proper shipping names are shown...

A in plain type and in alphabetical order
B so you know not to transport that shipment
C in italic type and loading order
D so you know you can transport that shipment without placards

⊞ Answer:

A In plain type and in alphabetical order

I would love te expand on that, but it speaks for itself.

12. Product ID numbers must appear on each side and both ends of a tank containing...

A Hazardous materials exceeding 500 gallons
B Food products exceeding 1000 gallons
C Hazardous materials exceeding 1000 gallons
D None of the above

⊞ Answer:

C Hazardous materials exceeding 1000 gallons

Ok, now I'm sweating. These are really hard! Again, not much I can add to most of these.

13. The hazardous materials identification number is important because...

A The shipper must include it on the package
B Police use the number to identify the material after an accident
C The shipper must include it on the shipping papers
D All of the above

⊞ Answer:

D All of the above

This is the key number that identifies the materials to everybody. It's listed on the placard and can be identified from a distance - or in my case, when I'm running really fast away from the danger!

14. The basic shipment of a hazardous product must include...

A The product's name and identification number
B The proper shipping name and the hazard class
C The proper shipping name, hazard class and identification number
D The shipper's name, the hazard class and a placard

⊞ Answer:

C The proper shipping name, hazard class and identification number

Memorize this one - it will likely be on your CDL test - it's one of their favorites.

15. In the event of an accident involving hazardous materials, you should first...

A Try to put out any fires
B Move leaking material out of the way
C Send someone for help and warn others of the danger
D Move your tractor away from the scene

⊞ Answer:

C Send someone for help and warn others of the danger

They didn't list "run like hell" as an answer so I was stumped on this one.
