Sometimes things don't always work out in ways that are fair. The trucking industry, and life at any large company in any industry, has its share of subtleties and complexities that are difficult to understand and deal with at times, especially for new drivers.
When I finally did get out there, though, I found out real quick that being a new driver is a tough place to be. It ain't as easy as it looks, and your trainer ain't around to read the map, answer questions, or spot you when you back in to that tight dock
New truck driver tips for surviving your first year on the road:
I learned more about truck driving over the past 4 weeks than I have in the previous three years combined. It was an amazing learning experience for me. Here are some of the highlights I learned along the way.
They told me I'm ready but I don't think I'm ready, I don't feel ready. My OTR instructor got mad a couple of times because I was going too slow (I don't speed, not even in my car) or I will slow down before the curves.
You want keep glancing in your mirrors and noting the speed that everyone around you is running. Knowing the speeds of all vehicles on all sides of you should give you a picture in your mind of what's going to be happening in the next few seconds.
By far the toughest aspect of truck driving is handling the endless stream of mental challenges you'll face day after day, month after month, year after year. It never ends. There are two things you have to be really careful about, and we all do them sometimes.
If you like your set 9 to 5 every day with a specific schedule and weekends off, truck driving is probably the worst career for you. Will your truck break down in the middle of nowhere? Will your dispatcher call up and say you need to switch loads with somebody?
