McElroy Truck Lines

I think McElroy knows the price of drivers is starting to climb.

Day cab switching to sleeper

Made about 49k last year doing dedicated day cab home daily. Want to make more of course, but when the company has overfilled the driver pool, with the winter upon us, there's not much I can do to get more miles. My company has sleepers too, but was looking around to see what else is out there. Only have this flatbed experience. Wife and I have talked, she's ok with me overnighting a few times a week ( she's been with me through the army and national guard days so she knows how to deal). Is it worth it though? Should I just suck it up, or is doing a regional sleeper job better? One I was looking at was Cardinal-Greatwide doing the Sysco distribution it if Front Royal, va. Home weekends and at least two nights a week.

I know, I'm rambling, just looking for some insight.

Can’t fix stupid

Parrot, up at pleasant Hill NC we had one guy go get high with someone he met at the Sadler Bros restaurant, next to our hotel in emporia. For some reason, he wasn't in class next day. Lol.

Just wanted to say I'm still here with McElroy, almost two years. Still day cab out of Hagerstown MD. I have to say that this company has been good so far. Just had a newborn, the insurance wasn't too bad, and they didn't rush me or the family to come back to work. Only thing I wish was they would pay more, as we are in the show part of the Lowe's season. I have looked on the other side of the fence, but I have to jump jobs for greener pastures when it's just good fertilizer they are feeding you lol.

Flatbed Questions

I'm a flatbedder that cane from the same thing as you, office work. I was getting soft and large. Been doing this for almost a year, and a have finally getting back in shape. Now, if you search the forums for the mcelroy truck lines thread, you'll see that I've posted on there. It can be some hard work. I pulled tarps and straps of in blowing snow and 40mph winds at 4am off I-80 in central Pennsylvania Mountains. Driving in the snow in my rookie season, even though I'm no stranger to the northeast and is weather. I love it though. I get the info on my qualcomm, secure my pre-tarped load at Lowe's, head out to the store, unload and head back for another load or go home for the day. No politics, no people looking over your shoulder, just some good hard work, sense of accomplishment, and money in your pocket. I was 250lbs last March. I'm now 220, with much more muscle and allot less fat. Lol.

Hey Alan I can honestly tell you that I've had a really good time so far. I've been with the company since June 24th I've been on my own since the first week of August. I'm a local day cab driver out of Hagerstown doing the dedicated runs for Lowe's. My sleep schedule of course had to change due to the fact that I need to be at the yard anywhere between midnight and 3 in the morning in order to be at the store I need to go to at a certain delivery time usually between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. . I can honestly say that I am getting more home time with my wife and son then when I did a nine-to-five job. I would only be home and awake from 6 to 10 every night. That's only 4 hours two if you count my son goes to sleep at 8 o'clock. Now I'm usually home anywhere between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. I get to pick up my son off the bus and actually hang out with everybody until about 6 o'clock at the latest. Tonight I'm going to be real lucky I get to stay up a little bit later until about 7:30 because I have such a short run tomorrow. Now as far as everything is been going for work I've been browsing around 900 week and about 1200 to 1500 miles. Again I'm very new to this and I'm also a day cab driver home every night so this will differ for guys and girls that are over the road. I've been through a lot of training through many different companies and two stints in the military and this is by far one of the best. They're not just training and number they're actually training you as a person. The entire time we did all these tests whether they were on paper or practical in a truck they wanted to make sure that we didn't do the proper thing but that we understood it and knew why we needed to do this something. Is most of the training stuff is still fresh in my memory if anybody wants to hit me up please feel free to private message me or just write on here.

As of right now I am going to Pleasant Hill, NC on August 1st to start my orientation with McElroy. I might graduate sooner from trucking school and if I do then I might try to move it up to July 25th. Super excited but nervous as hell at the same time.

Well, I'm home now from the two weeks training. Will start my 4 weeks with the trainer here at the hagerstown Lowe's terminal. It wasn't as bad as I thought. Very laid back, informative, fun. I excelled in some areas like map routing information. We left with the full class of 7 we stated with.

So yesterday was paperwork all day, pee test, hair test (I now have a bald right leg), and handing out manual and fmcsr book. Today was physicals and agility test. Took forever, but we all had questions that Brent the trainer never really answered. We've heard people get sent home for physicals, but what about the agility? I completed all tasks, though my heart rate was up. I think I did good, but a few others were definitely scared. Anyone know?
