Navypoppop's Bio

Retired OTR driver w/ 45 years experience, approx. 3 million accident free miles now living in Winter Haven, Fl. Served 2 years in US Navy 1966-1968. Love staying connected with today's drivers, asking about their careers, especially reliving the old days of driving during the 1960-1970's. Very much interested in history of old truck stops- Truckstops of America, Union 76, Travel Ports of America, Pure Truck Stops, etc. Enjoy visiting T/A in Wildwood, Fl. and Petro in Reddick, Fl. with my wife just to have coffee, walk the grounds and visit with today's drivers.

My wife and I have sold our home and everything we do not need and bought a new 5th wheel and Ram 2500 and enjoy travelling the USA during the summer months and stay in Florida for the winter. We bought a park model mobile home for the winter stay in Fl. and give the 5th wheel a rest and a little more room to stretch out.

Massive Layoffs At UPS A Big Win For The Union!

It is incorrect in stating that all union jobs pay great. Only if your union company is paying their drivers under "The Master Freight Contract ". All union jobs will usually offer better benefits, overtime, etc.

I have worked under both the Master Freight Contract and individual company plans that were negotiated on a company to union Contract. In both cases the working conditions were always good.

All unions are not the same and drivers need to evaluate their own needs before they either agree for or against unions. My father was a very dedicated long time Teamster from the 1940s until his death and would back his beliefs. I personally belonged early in my career, layer off in mid 1970s and took a withdrawal card and re-entered in the mid 1980s when I moved to Florida until the job closed. I never again worked for Teamster job. To each his own.

Owner OPs leaving their truck running all night?

You surely won't get any complaints from the residents.

Owner OPs leaving their truck running all night?

It seems like a lot of today's drivers have become spoiled or pampered. I spent my early career during the 1960s and 1970s. I had no a/c, no power steering, bunk, apu, inverter, auto. trans. or computer to tell me when to drive or stop.

In the summer you opened the vent windows and floor vent and sweated and tried not to swallow the bugs. When you had to sleep I had a rope hammock slung under my trailer and no one bothered you in those days.

In the winter you idled at 1000 rpms, placed a piece of plywood across the seats with a blanket and slept like a baby. You took a shower in a back room community shower just like high school. No fancy tile and sometimes no hot water.

There were no microwaves or refrigerators in the trucks. You ate your meals in the sit down restaurants in the drivers area of the truckstops.

We all survived those "harsh conditions" without today's fancy large cars. Just think how easy it is today when compared to the good old days.

Thinking of Packrat...

Thanks to the Meet and Greet thread here on TT I have had the pleasure of meeting both PackRat and Big Scott. I have sat and enjoyed lunch and small talk with both and hold them in high regard.

I will not pass judgement on either of them as my opinion is based on the conversations that we enjoyed and everyone is entitled their own feelings.

One Million Safe Miles Reached!!!

Congratulations Kearsey! It is a major accomplishment and a Jersey girl did it. Your dedication to safety and help for fellow drivers proves your professionalism.

Take the time to absorb the glitz and glory you've earned it. The next million will come sooner than you think. I had the privilege of 3 million plus in my 42 years and lucky and proud to have made it.

Again congratulations Kearsey

I'd like to become a driver, but having trouble finding what I need...

BK is right. When I retired and my wife and I began full time rving we found Good Sams Mail Service. They offer 3 choices for permanent legal residence in Florida, Texas and South Dakota. We chose Florida as we winter there and we have a legal address for DL, vehicle registration and voter registration.

Would you pull this trailer?

I agree on your not pulling it. If you were to be stopped or inspected and the officer could not verify the VIN you could be put out of service. Let the company get it straightened out.

TMC and Drug Testing

I too agree with the mods on this one 100%. He has too many posts about cheating the system and if he does succeed in beating the odds he will be a ticking time bomb waiting for destruction. He seems to not want to get clean but just defeat the law and do it his way right or wrong.
