Been seeing all over Twitter and The Truckers Forum that Rand McNally is going down. Anyone have any concrete info?

Welcome Chris!

I'm glad to see you came here when you wanted the truth. Here's what I'll say... A few short months ago everyone on Twitter, Facebook, and most political forums were saying Hillary Clinton was going to win decisively. Think about it.

The Internet has given us some really fast and easy access to information, and an alarmingly fast and furious growth to rumors.

Probably a Russian Plot.

Based on a fairly thorough search on the internet, I'd have to say that's not the case at this time. Twitter and misc. Internet forums are not exactly in the 'reliable' category of information sources.

With GoogleMaps and everyone else - they're not going to compete that well in the digital market.

They have a very niche market - and they've downsized through the years in order to compete in that market.

They did "go under", over a decade ago - emerging from a Chap 11 in '03.

Some of their products are "dated" by the integration of things in tablets, phones and automotive systems (TPMS, backup cameras, etc., coming standard on most 4-wheelers now).

Like it or not - the paper edition of the Motor Carriers Atlas is still an invaluable resource in our industry. Even I have the current one on my bookshelf for reference.

Interesting.

Just did some research, and after they came out of the Chap 11, they were bought. Though now the owner is being charged with stealing a billion dollars from the companies she owns and manages.

The rumors might be true after all.

It is the parent company that is going down. Rand McNalley will be sold off to another company but will still be around.

Even IF Rand McNally were to go under, there would be another that would take its place. As Rick pointed out the Motor Carriers Atlas is too invaluable an asset for someone not to produce it or something similar. Yes it is a niche market, but one the Rand McNally pretty much has cornered.

More than likely if the parent company goes under someone else will just buy the Rand McNally brand.

*digs through pocket* I got a half used chapstick, maxed credit card, and some pocket lint. How much will that get me?

That would buy you Apple's maps app, and you still have the chapstick and card!
