The Pennsylvania RailRoad demonstrates a new innovation being used on the railroads - the road-to-rail piggyback trains.

The rise of large-scale trucking operations and the industry as a whole came about, in part, by the manufacturing boom of war-era and post WW2 industry in areas without readily accessible rail transport. Before the Interstate Highway System was completed, industries needed an effective way to get their products to the rails to be shipped across the country.

This vintage 1950's era film takes a look at the trailer/rail piggyback train system, including a short history lesson on the origins of the coast-to-coast rail system, and it's necessity to the economic growth and sustainability of a growing U.S. population.

If you've ever wondered how these rail cars were loaded, or at least used to be, pay attention at around 7:30 and watch the yard dogs show off their skills.
