Hi everyone, have Class A CDL but, Zero experience. Haven't been in a truck since 2009. The biggest thing that concerns me is if I struggle with something in training, how patient will a company be. Have no clue how I will be in a truck after 8 years. Any thoughts would be appreciated Thanks

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I'd look at and apply to several Paid CDL Training Programs and tell them your story. They have heard this before, so at least you have piece of mind they'll understand your situation. Most likely they will either require you to go through the entire process, or offer some version of abbreviated training.

Good luck!

You might be nervous...but I had never even driven a manual before...so no matter how bad you are...you'll still do better than I did lol

Just to give you an idea of "patience" for your possible struggles, Swift's school policy is you get three tries at test time. If you fail the first round, you get an extra week at school (no extra charges) to practice, then another three trials. Officially they say you can pay down a few hundred bucks on your tuition (so it's really not extra money) and try again. But I've heard of a student from my Chad that got back in for a third test.

Botom line, the school really wants you to pass. It affects their Pass Rate statistic.

And a lot of what you learned will come back anyway. Like that bicycle thing - you never really forget.

Tarheel I am in the same situation as you. I am returning to the industry after being away since 09. You will be amazed at how quickly things come back to you.
