I agree that truckers need to be more fit, however, demanding businesses offer a particular amenity.. all truck stops?? Sorry but I think that's just crazy to even expect that.
You don't need a gym to become more fit. Walk more, use resistance bands, prepare your own healthier meals instead of the fast food crap most truck stops provide.
Your next petition needs to be one that demands that truck drivers actually use such facilities. I have seen a fair amount of small gym areas in some of the major truck stops. Not once have I ever seen a driver in there using those facilities! Good luck with your campaign.
The availability of a gym is not the reason most drivers are out of shape. Nothing is preventing drivers from exercising. More government involvement is seldom the best solution to problems. Personal responsibility is the key.
I am not in favor of the government forcing anything on free enterprise, especially something that will undoubtedly raise the liability insurance for every truck stop, including the smaller "Mom & Pop" run establishments. We have enough taxes, regulations and political self-serving BS as it is. Thanks, but no thanks,...you do not need a sophisticated gym to maintain fitness.
AMEN! to all the replies. More laws don't make us healthier, but they WILL make things more expensive.
Seat belt installation was required over 30 years ago. Today, their use is required by law AND STILL people don't use them. Hmm.
Personal health and fitness is an individual decision regardless of profession. No reason drivers can't walk lot/property of most customers while being loaded/unloaded or knocking out a few miles at beginning or end of 10. You are free to do pushups/crunches on shower room floor prior to washing up. There are also fitness tools such as resistance bands or small weights that can be kept on truck. As others have mentioned, you can't make private businesses build certain facilities on their property. I find it annoying when drivers think all private businesses should be at their personal service, such as whining about being kicked off certain properties when out of hours (I understand frustration at some customers who take sweettime doing their part), hotels and other businesses don't need to post signs or allow you to park, they purchased and pay taxes for their land and don't have to let you on it. How about the government tells you, you must have designated play area with certain toys and swingset for whenever friends or family with children visit, doesn't make much sense does it.....same concept you expect every private business to fully service your personal needs. Silliness
the petition will be that all truck stop by law need to have a gym on site
It would seem there would be economics behind this idea in some way. Like when you look at the additional health costs involved with obesity problems, wouldn't the healthcare insurance industry find some sort of incentive that would pay off? Like reduce the cost of insurance if you reach a certain level of fitness?
I've always thought the only way you're going to get most truckers to get in shape is to pay them to do it.
Pay increase?
Cheaper healthcare costs?
Tax reduction of some sort?
It wouldn't just have to apply to truckers, of course. Our entire population as a whole is far less than fit.
I just always thought that someone could make more money by reducing obesity and increasing the general level of fitness.
I like that you want to help your fellow truck drivers, but this isn't the way. It's not fair to the owners of the truck stops and would likely put many of them out of business, and they would still be largely unused.
Now something I could see being more effective would be organizing activities at truck stops and company terminals--events like walks/runs/bike races for a cause like cancer for example. I think you would see a fair amount of drivers join in because of the convenience of it, and it benefits the business hosting it by making them look good (not the point but it's true).
But no, I can't see the practicality or wisdom of having the government require gyms at truck stops. You'd likely see the already sky-high prices at TS rise even more.
A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

It I create a petition in the White House page for. let make trucking driver fit again. Would you take the time to sign the petition .the petition will be that all truck stop by law need to have a gym on site .Thank you Just a handful can make a huge difference. Think about it. When one person influences a few others, there are two major effects: A ripple effect that, over time, can actually impact thousands over generations.
