I am considering jumping into the life of a professional driver. My fiancé currently drives and I work for Corporate America, Big Bank and I'm TIRED of it. I am struggling pulling my weight when it comes to finances and would love to make a bigger contribution while also spending more than a few hours a night with him. He keeps mentioning how great it would be for us to team drive for a few years and bank all the cash for a house purchase in a few years. I think it would be a fantastic experience for us, a great way to get rid of debt, and a way to purchase/build our dream home. All the pros sound great in my head but I'm still super nervous at the idea of making the leap.

Are there companies that would allow my fiancé to act as my trainer (he has been a trainer at his current company) after I get my CDL permit?

Have any of you taken a similar leap and can offer some advice?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I think Swift may allow that or Covenant? I know someone else was looking into that but I cannot remember who. Hopefully a Swiftie (Errol) can give you some insight.

In the meantime, I'll search around and see if I can figure out who it was.

I teamed with my other half.. who was my company trainer when I started driving. LOL. We kept in touch after I went solo, then later began dating, and then after that, teamed for a while.

Teaming was great for us, and I'd do it again without hesitation, but our company is not really set up for teaming but they sure have solo down to a science. We both really like our company and aren't the job hopping kind, so we opted to each go back solo after Safety had requested that I begin training and then he resumed training inexperienced drivers.

Have your fiance ask his copany if they will let him train you and then team together.
