First time ever in California and first time through Donner Pass. I'll be running around Cali for the next few days.

Nice!

I used to love going out to California. The DOT enforcement was always real strict and that made me nervous but it's such a dynamic place.

Donner is pretty awesome when there isn't snow on the ground.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Yes, Donner was spectacular except for the sun in my eyes.

One week after I passed my CDL exam, my trainer and I got a load to CA. I was still getting used to driving with my trainer asleep in the back instead of sitting in the passenger seat. My first mountain pass was Donner, and I got there around 2 or 3am.... The twisting roads and downgrades had me gripping the wheel so hard my hands went numb. I'm also pretty sure my butt bit off a chunk of the seat from clinching so hard. Would love to see it during the day sometime.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
