I am 51 years old and single. I have been looking for something new to do that will pay a bit better than what I am earning now and allow me to see more of the country and truck driving seems like a good fit. The problem is I am pretty short (not sure if that matters) and I have a poor sense of direction, but do okay following GPS and road signs. Can anyone tell me what a newbie would generally expect to earn their first year and how hard would it be for someone who gets lost a lot without GPS to get back on track? I would hate to start this new adventure and find out I suck at it after quitting my job and paying for school.

Hi and welcome!

My suggestion would be to watch some Youtube trip.planning videos amd buy and atlas. take day trip a few hours from home and find your way back...without using the GPS...they are tools.to truckers but not fail proof. Too mamy truckers follow the GPS into woods, fields, lakes...one went onto the Atlantic City boardwalk!!!

i got.my CDL at 41 so thats not an issue, and im short. getting lost can be part of the job, but 200 miles lost is something different. id try using only maps for awhile and see how you do

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I'm 49 years old and 5'1". I just graduated Sage Truck Driving School and I leave Monday for orientation with May Trucking Company. You can definitely do this.
