For insurance purposes, once you get your permit you would have to go through orientation and be trained, yes this is true.
as far as being married, that must be a company thing and you should have asked before him taking the job. To me it makes no sense because i can train anyone...im not married to the guy im training on my truck now. Id ask in an email whether this is true and get it in writing with the name of someone in authority.
Now...if he is a lease.op, things could be different....they might be talking health insurance and brought it up in a training/team discussion? For example, lease ops do not get company health insurance...however at prime, one spouse can be the lease op.and the other spouse is a company driver....entitled to company benefits, and therefore is the policy holder who can enroll the spouse on the health insurance etc. Therefore if you became a company driver and driving on his lease truck, he would only get health benefits if you are married.
that has nothing to do with his eligibility to train. and most companies will have him wait 3 to 6 mos to train after orientation, even if he has 20 years experience.
UNLESS it is some sort of insurance policy on his lease saying no other driver is covered. maybe there is a spouse driver clause...idk.
what company and is he a company or lease op?
Heres a thought...does his company even allow training? Not all companies train new drivers, especially smaller ones. maybe it is a courtesy or perk for the drivers to be allowed to train their spouses, and you do not qualify for that. if that is the company policy, that is policy. sorry.
be sure to update this please thnx

My fiance is an experienced OTR driver and about a month ago, we took a chance with a new company. Our goal was to settle in and then focus on getting my CDL so that we can team drive. He went through the 3 day orientation, we (sorta) picked out our truck, and off we went. When I signed the insurance/rider policy, the HR person informed me that once I got my permit, I could no longer be a rider due to insurance policies and that I'd have to go through their orientation, then my fiance "could train me."
Well, somewhere along the line, it was told to him that he could train me ONCE WE WERE MARRIED. 😱 Now, I don't know if this means that Company retains this policy or if it's an industry standard.
Regardless, I am super disappointed and kinda ****ed that the only way (in our particular situation) I can get the training necessary to pass the field exam for my CDL, is directly tied to our marital status, or lack thereof.
Does anyone know anything about this "loophole" or how to overcome it? Thanks in advance
