Great news folks! We now have several awesome pages of information in our Trucker's Wiki about drug and alcohol testing:

Alcohol and Drug Policies & Testing

This is the main topic and it covers the Federal policies on who is tested, how often they're tested, and what drugs they test for.

DOT Drug And Alcohol Testing Information & Methods

This subtopic gives more specific information about the various types of tests that are done, what they detect, and how long they will detect it

Hair Follicle vs. Urinalysis: Breakdown By Company

This subtopic gives specific information about which types of testing are done by the various companies and when we received our last information on the company.

We'll continue to use this conversation to collect information and answer questions. All of the information we gather will be kept up to date in our wiki.

I get asked privately on a regular basis which companies do hair follicle testing and which ones do urinalysis. We're going to use this conversation to gather information on the various companies.

If you'd prefer to keep this private because you don't want people knowing which company you work for I'm totally cool with that. Click on my name to the left of this message and it will take you to my profile. You'll see a link that says "Would you like to send Brett a private message?" Click on that and shoot me a private message. I don't care who you are or who you work for. I just want to be able to help people get their trucking careers underway and help them prepare for any challenges that lie ahead.

Thanks!!!!!!

After doing more searching...... It looks like my choices in the past will stop me from going for this new career... I dont have years to wait.... wow, this was the last thing i needed tonight.

I think no matter what course you go through, your potential employers could do a more involved test, so consider that too. I don't have to worry about it, but if I did, I wouldn't leave anything to chance.

Geo, I dont know where you got the five year info from but to the best of my knowledge, a hair test can only be traced back 1 year... You hear rumors about companies saying they can go back 2 years and such, this is a scare tactic they use to see who is gonna look guilty. Most companies only look back 90 days... My cousin had to get one done for a security job, not like a mall security or anything but a legit security detail. I myself have a person who is close to me who also said the same thing. I have done research on my own and the most common answer I see is 1 year.

I could be wrong (according to my g.f. its all the time) but I think I am pretty solid on this. I will research again to be doubly sure....

I am doing the google search as we speak (two computers is awesome). The first sight I clicked on said nothing about 5 years. dont get so edgy and dont tell the wifey anything just yet! when are you going to school? when are you going to company sponsored school? these are factors to consider. If you can try to wait another month to take the test. hair grows at a rate of I think a half inch per month. So if you get a hair cut now and keep it short, 1.5 inches and then get it cut again in another month you could be fine. even better if you can wait 2 mos.
