Conway Truckload is based out of Joplin, MO and was founded in 1929. The company has grown into one of the largest trucking operations in the country and employs more than 28,500 people. Conway hauls mostly dryvan freight, although they are diverse in both Truckload as well as Less Than Truckload operations.

Conway Minimum Hiring Qualifications

The basic minimum hiring requirements include, but are not limited to:
  • 21 years of age or older, with a Class A commercial driver’s license
  • Three months minimum current, over-the-road tractor-trailer driving experience
  • Live in the Con-way Truckload hiring area (area excludes ID, ME, OR, WA, southern FL, western MT, western WY and the northern parts of MI, MN and WI)
  • Right to work and live in the United States and willingness to travel all 48 contiguous states and Canada for two to three weeks at a time
  • Ability to pass all applicable Con-way Truckload Certification class testing/requirements
  • HAZMAT endorsement or willingness to obtain a HAZMAT endorsement within 120 days of hire
  • No BACs, DUIs, DWIs or license suspensions for moving violations in the past five years**
  • Ability to meet work attendance/availability requirements and meet all applicable legal and DOT regulations to drive a commercial truck in the United States and Canada

Company Training Duration

Drivers in training must drive 7,500 miles with a certified trainer. This generally takes about 4 to 5 weeks.

Forced To Team After Training?

Drivers are eligible to join the solo OTR division immediately following training.

The Conway Freight division only hauls dry van cargo.

Conway Driver Pay

Solo truckload drivers average $51,651 per year and teams average $115,856 per team. When you begin your OTR career with Con-way Truckload, you'll earn:

  • 0-10,000 miles - $0.26 per mile.
  • 10,001-59,999 miles - $0.31 per mile.
  • 60,000-89,999 miles - $0.33 per mile.
  • 90,000-119,999 miles - $0.35 per mile.
  • 120,000-124,999 miles - $0.38 per mile.

Experienced solo drivers at Con-way Truckload start at $0.38 per mile and quickly increase from there.

In addition to your normal mileage pay, you will also earn bonus pay of $0.05 per mile if you are required to travel through these states:

  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Rhode Island
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • New Hampshire
  • District of Columbia

Mileage pay is paid for all dispatched miles whether loaded, empty, or bobtail.

Benefits

After 90 days of employment, drivers become eligible for discounted health and life insurance benefits. After 1 year of employment, drivers may enroll in a 401k matching retirement program and also become eligible for paid vacation pay and holiday pay.

Conway Benefits and Policies

  • Paid Tuition:

    Con-way Truckload offers paid tuition, room and board to drivers who commit to one year of driving for Con-way Truckload.

  • Home time Policy:

    Expect to be out for 3 to 4 weeks at a time with 1 day of home time earned for every 7 days worked.

  • Tuition Reimbursement:

    Con-way Truckload offers tuition reimbursement up to $4,000.

  • Rider And Pet Policy:

    You may have a rider at no cost, a pet is allowed with a 1cpm decrease in pay.

  • New York City Dispatch:

    Drivers may be required to carry freight into, out of, or through NYC and earn bonus cents per mile for doing so.

  • Canada Border Crossing Policy:

    You must be able to drive a commercial motor vehicle in Canada and must obtain a valid passport within 120 days of hire.

  • Team Opportunities:

    If team driving is desired, Con-way will assist in pairing you up with another driver or you may find a driver on your own to team with. Team driving is entirely done by choice and is not forced.

Hazardous Materials:
A hazardous materials endorsement is required within 120 days of hire and you will be expected to transport hazardous materials when needed.

Drop And Hook:
Nearly all of Con-way Truckload’s freight is drop and hook.

Forced Dispatch:
All truckload drivers at Conway are forced dispatched.

  • Local / Regional / Dedicated Opportunities:

    Con-way Truckload has other the road, regional, and dedicated opportunities for solos and teams. This largely depends on where you live and your willingness to relocate for other positions.

  • Average Age Of Equipment:

    Most trucks in the Truckload division are less than 3 years old.

  • Transmission Type:

    10 speed manual transmissions or AMT (Automated Manual Transmission).

  • Speed Of Trucks:

    Trucks are governed at 65mph.

  • APU / Idle Policy:

    Trucks are equipped with APU's and inverters may be installed with shop approval.

  • Electronic / Paper Logs:

    Electronic logs are used.
