Hey MIke. Usually it's best to try to plan ahead for as many things as possible, try to get some things done while you're on the road, or simply try to get as much as possible done while at home. When you're running over the road it's very hard to get "extra" time off or get home earlier than your next scheduled home time. You're right - it's not much time at all to get things done. You're in a tough spot in that regard. It's something you learn to deal with as time goes on, but there will be times you'd really like to get home for something asap but if it's not an emergency there usually isn't much you can do but wait til it's your time to go home.

Brett,

I'm still reading these articles, they are great! Thanks! One question regarding "home time", which concerns me since I hear some drivers are out for a few weeks at a time: If you work for a large carrier, and need some time off for, say, dental work or other medical related issue, do they give you a hard time about it? It just seems a 2-3 week on/1 weekend off schedule doesn't leave much time for those incidental commitments.
