Hi Sharron. With personality issues the best approach to take is definitely to deal with it as best he can and get through the training. But safety issues are quite another story altogether. The main problem is that companies don't like students who complain, rock the boat, or cause problems within the company. But with the safety issues you mentioned, your husband obviously has some very serious safety concerns which need to be addressed.

The best thing he can do is first try to work it out with the trainer. I mean, texting while driving is illegal and dangerous and your husband should carefully mention this to his trainer. Having one isolated close call in bad road conditions is not alarming, but if his driving consistently seems dangerous, that too needs to be addressed first with the trainer and then with the company if the trainer refuses to handle himself more professionally.

I would recommend your husband consider buying one of those little recorders that he can hide and attempt to record the conversation with the trainer involving these issues. Some trainers have horrible attitudes and will "go off" on the student with a vengeance and then act like an injured little lamb in the offices when the safety director brings up the complaints he's received. A driver should conduct himself professionally at all times, and trainers should be held to the highest standards. If his driving and attitude are unprofessional and unsafe and an attempt at working it out between themselves fails to produce results, your husband should have a conversation with the safety director or the training coordinator. But he should handle himself with humility and a calm professionalism. He can not allow himself to get all worked up and emotional because he'll look like the "unstable student" who's accusing the experienced trainer of not knowing what he's doing and that doesn't bode well for him.

Hi Pappy got a question for you. My husband is training right now with a company driver. He has some problems with the guy. The trainer has done no training basically just lays in the bunk with the curtains closed most of the time. He texts when he is driving. He almost reared ended a car and almost jacked knifed the truck the other day in snow. My husband feels unsafe with him when he is driving, and also that the guy is not doing any training. He has not been up in the front of the truck with my husband more two hours altogather in the last 4 weeks. The very 1st day he crawled in the bunk almost as soon as my husband started to drive and went to sleep. This trainer is 28 years old and has only been driving for 1 year. What do you know or hear about trainers and what if anything should my husband do. He can request another trainer but almost all the drivers out on the road are saying he will just get the same? My Dad who passed on now was a driver for about 40 years. I remember the old days you speak of and trucking sure has changed. Thanks for any help you can give me on the subject.Sharron

I didn't do the "school" thing either, Pappy. I'm kinda glad that I just barely got grandfathered in, but boy that test was a hoot! But that's another blog post...

Hey Jim...

I tend to be "Brutally Honest".

In this day of "Warm Fuzzies" and "Political Correctness".

I believe there is a lack of men who are willing to speak the truth, no matter the cost.

Don't hand me that crap about "your truth is not my truth". To me that's a total cop out!

If there are more than one truths to any given thing then that is chaos!

For instance one of my daughters has went off to the college of her choice. She was raised to keep her pants on and pick a good man to marry. Well... she was indoctrinated with some kinda crap by her Professors that going against the 10 Commandments set down by God himself was totally ok if that sort of lifestyle was not what she wanted...WTF is that about. She came home in tears. Totally confused as to how to gain her degree with out compromising her ethics and God fearing believe.

I told her the one truth that knocks fear's ass out cold every time...Do not fear man who can kill only the body, but fear God who can destroy the soul and spirit.

It seemed to help.
Young folks these days have had no true leadership to speak of. So how can they be expected to know whats true if they are told there are no truths?

Well...I'm feelin' the urge to chase that black rabbit...but I won't.
