This stuff is still fun for me to do and you may think so too! I did this because I really was intrigued with the loads and how the whole system works – from the product being made, all the way until they reach their final destination. I kept a total of all my driving miles per day/week/month and year. You will be amazed at how many miles you do in a month and at by the end of a year! Then I put that in a notebook.
I was in 20 states, including the one I lived in. I stopped and got postcards for family/friends from each state. That was a fun thing to do for all of us. Sometimes another postcard was sent of the capitol city of the state.
I also did a list of some of the products I hauled, some of which included tires, pudding, dirt, vending machines, tools, pop, bottles and cans to the beverage industry, junk mail to the U.S. Post Office, items for grocery warehouses, shoes, items for your big chain lumber yards, and items for your automotive chains. This is not my complete list and I did not start this right away. In time it will seem like you might have hauled almost everything, and you may have!
When I weighed at a Cat Scale, I started to collect the collector cards that comes with your scale ticket. These are also in a notebook in their plastic holders for collection cards.
You can also take notes in your spare time so that you can write about a certain trip or tell stories to your family and friends about it someday. You will also be surprised at the end of your day that you will find yourself wondering “did that happen today or was it yesterday?” Some days are super busy, and then some are rather quiet and dull.
I also kept all of the articles I found on women drivers and women in trucking. Articles ranging from simple the one page ads all the way up to the longer stories about them. Naturally I have these in a notebook too. You will find these in the trucking magazines at your truckstops.
For whatever your reason may be for entering the trucking world, you might as well make it fun and interesting!

Wow, it's hard to believe, but I've been at my current employer for 1 year as of today. I began Truck Driving School in January of 2009, completed that in February of 2009, and was hired on in March of 2009. This post will simply serve as some observations that I've made as my first year of a truck driver.... - March 4, 2010 -- Truck Driving Down Donner Pass
Until recently, I had never actually been on Donner's Pass in California. Donners Pass is usually touted as one of the more dangerous areas for truck drivers and is the site of many fatal accidents. It's quite an experience! I had the pleasure of going through it at night. I would have liked to take it during the day so I could see some of the scenery around me, but I'm sure I'll get that chance in the future. I was still able to make some key observations though...... - January 20, 2010 -- Inside Trucking Part 3: Life On The Road
With all the fuel that drivers purchase, it's wise to get the driver payback cards from the truck stops that offer them. Its free, and it's a way of saying thank you to the professional driver. For each gallon of fuel purchased, you get 1 cent/point put on the card. You can use these points to purchase anything except alcohol and tobacco products.

Before I became a truck driver, there was nothing better than a good snow storm in the winter. Sliding around in my 4-wheeler, sledding, snowball fights, snowmen, hearing the scrape of the snowplow as is passes by, and the beautiful sight it leaves. That was then, and this is now!... - January 6, 2010 -- Randy’s Phase 1 CDL Training – Part 9 – He’s Done!

I keep reading that the 2 most important factors for a successful marriage, especially in OTR trucking, are trust and communication...this week, we had neither one. I suppose the added stress of all this didn't help, and we both had a major thinking/behavior relapse. This career truly does test a relationship, and any weakness that existed before WILL be magnified 1000 times.

Even when you're just cruising along, minding your own business, and doing everything right, you never know when someone is going to do something incredibly dangerous right in front of you, and this was one of those times.... - December 2, 2009 -- Randy’s Phase 1 CDL Training – Part 5
Another day stuck at the school, another interesting story...don't know if it's true, but it's interesting. Supposedly, a student took a bottle of liquor on the truck while with an instructor and other students. They got 30 miles away at a truck stop, the safety manager and cops were called, and he got a D.U.I. If it really happened, it's incredibly stupid! A lot of odd things happen at that school....
Rhonda,
Those are some pretty cool things to do! I already thought about the postcard thing, but never thought about keeping a log on what I’ve hauled, the weights of my loads, etc. I’m definately going to steal your ideas!!
