Truck Driving School Days Two and Three: Our CDL Permit Test and DOT Physical

Day Two of CDL Schooling

Well, today was another day in the classroom. The instructor does a nice job and is kinda funny also. Today we went over the DMV testing that we will do on Wednesday. We also went over logbooks, which we will not use much since Central Refrigerated is using electronic log books. But no matter what school you go to, I am sure they will teach you how the logbook works because you’re going to have to know the rules no matter what system you are using.

The living area is getting better, and I need to get used to it since it is bigger than the sleeper of a tractor trailer. But at the same time I am looking forward to going to the hotel next week.

Today we did do some practice testing for the CDL exam and I did just fine. Just a word of advice for anyone wanting to get into trucking and will be going to a truck driving school that is only 15 days long - get online or get the CDL manual for the state you will be studying in and study, study and study some more. I am very glad that I did!

And by the way, we have online practice CDL tests here at TruckingTruth so check em out!

Well that is it for today.

Day Three of CDL Training

What a nice day in Utah. Unfortunately, we lost a few students yesterday. I think two of them were because they didn’t pass the DOT physical and two because of their background check. Central Refrigerated Trucking will not mess around on the background check. If you have any criminal background, you are gone.

Today we went to the DMV and took our cdl tests. We had 6 students that did not pass. They have one more try on Thursday and if they do not pass, they are sent home. By the way, in case you are wondering, I passed!

So the next phase starts on Thursday when we will be watching some movies and taking some more tests. Central Refrigerated requires that we score a prefect 100% on our safety exam, and nothing else will do. But the good news is that you can take the test as many times as you need.

They do keep you busy around here though. Homework and studying every night. Well, I guess those 2am study sessions paid off for me today!

I do like the CDL training though. It is very fast paced but the instructors really do care and they want everyone to graduate and get their CDL. The one thing I really do like is the fact that they give you 5 days to decide if you want to stay or not. If you decide that trucking is not for you, they let you go home and you don’t owe them anything.

Well I better run. I need to study and do my homework. Tonight we need to read 3 chapters and study the Smith System on defensive driving.

So far this school is working great for me!

I’m certainly glad that you have an instructor with a sense of humor. I found that it helped me to retain more because I could relate it to something funny instead of something solemn.

I never had to deal with the electronic logbook that you speak of. I only used the paper logbooks and sometimes I had to keep up to three each for hubby and me to run the way that we did. I can say this now only because we’ve been off the road for 9 years, but that was really hard to do running three different books for each of us and making sure that we had the right one if we happened to get pulled over or asked to come into a weigh station. THAT was intense!

We’re very glad to see that you’re studying because that’s the only way you’ll get past the hardest part of truck driving. Once you have that CDL in your pocket, you’ll be thankful for all of this. And you’ll be a better driver for it! Keep up the good work.

Looking forward to your next post!

So you are/did train with Central Refrigerated? I am going there too and I am from PA. Now I am curious as to what the Dot Physical in Utah consists of? Can you give me a run down of what to expect? Thanks for your time.
