Art,

Thanks for the comment! You should pick out the company you want to work at and apply before going for your refresher course. Some companies will want you to do a 4 week refresher course, others will just verify that you can handle a truck - so you can get by on a one week refresher. Most of the larger companies do not offer refresher courses but truck driving schools normally do. Again, verify with the company that you want to work with if there is a refresher course requirement. Good luck to you!

Great information Tanya! You are spot on as to what has happened. I'm glad I found this forum as I was seeking current information as to the state of the trucking industry today. Many will have you believe there is no hope. I left the road in 97 after 2.25 years as a driver/trainer and have been in a field that will not survive the new economy you allude to. CDL is current, no blemishes of any kind, and I'm seeking to return to the road. After reading this forum and the folks that post here, I'm encouraged that it will happen. I'm not sure if any of the large companies offer "refresher training", but if need be, I'll pick one and return to their driving school. Thank You for being here.

Rhonda,

Thanks for your comments. It sounds like you go above and beyond for your possible employees, very admirable, not the standard. I hope that if and when they are hired they pay you the respect and consideration you EARNED.

And yes, it is a new world for truck driving and I do hope that it's a better world that comes of this new economy.

Take care and Drive safe,
Tanya

Great post. This goes along with a topic I mentioned in the forum. Keep your CDL safe and run legal so you can get ahead and be the "cream of the crop" with employers.

I also did applications and I tried my best to give everyone equal chance on getting hired. But when the application was not filled out/messy/very hard to read, this gives one the impression of future log book keeping and other paperwork that office staff must read. Is this the right way to think? It is not, but it is a fact of life. Talk to the person who gave you the application and explain your situation if needed so that person can make notes and give you an equal chance with the other applicants. I also took it upon myself to call the applicants to clarify/get more information to give you the chance of employment. There are some of us like me out there who really do care and go the extra step to help you.
