I won't say it's completely impossible to find a local job straight out of school, but pretty darn close. I've heard of a lot of people getting local jobs with as little as 3-6 months of over the road, but the vast majority of local jobs require at least some OTR experience. I'm sure it happens once in a great while, but I wouldn't call it a realistic expectation. I would call it realistic to hope for a local job after 6 months OTR, and to expect to be able to find one for certain after a year OTR. It will also depend on how large the population is in your area. Naturally, the larger the city, the more opportunities there are.

I know what you mean about the psychic part. I am in a 4wheeler (4now) and drive close to 300 miles to get to my weekend job. Crazy right? 2 days a week w/ full state benefits-I'm not quitting that! Anyway, I like to travel w/ the truckers and am at the point where I also can tell who's going to do what before they do it. I'm all over this site researching the trucking industry and you have been very helpful and informative. Has anyone been lucky enough to be hired local right out of school?

Wow, what a great story and very inspiring! I am a student in my last week of training before I enter the trainer phase. Of course, I am worried about all the things you talked about in this story and it gives me comfort to know that although it will be challanging, there is light at the end of the tunnel and it comes around and becomes enjoyable. I am excited and extremely nervous about the solo part but after reading this I know I will get through it and be glad and proud once I do.

Thank you for taking the time to write this story for all of us newbies out here.
