Alvin Community College offers a 160-hour Class "A" CDL training program, providing classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel driving experience, a pre-trip testing training program, and refresher training courses. Students are prepared for entry-level employment in the trucking industry and will receive their CDL in 4 weeks via day classes or 8 weeks via evening classes.
The pre-trip course is customized to provide the learner with all of the training and practice they need in order to pass the pre-trip testing component needed to obtain a Class A or B License. The 40-hour CDL Refresher Course will reacquaint the student with equipment and safe operation. The student will demonstrate control of the vehicle; exhibit the ability to shift the tractor efficiently; demonstrate the operation of a tractor trailer combination; and move the vehicle safely forward and backward around various obstacles. Classes are based on demand.
All students are required to have their CDL Commercial Learner's Permit before registering, at a cost of $25. Students are required to pass all four sections of the CLP exam. These are: Special Requirements for Texas Commercial Motor Vehicles, General Knowledge (Driving Safely), Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles.
For tuition assistance, financial aid is available through FAFSA, and payment plans are offered.
The vehicles used for training in the CDL program are comparable to those used in the trucking industry. They have two trucks that are conventional tractors, with 10-speed and 13-speed transmissions, setback axles, dual tandem rear axles with Jiff lock. Their trailer is a 53-foot dry van with access to other trailers.
