Somerset Community College CDL Training

Training for beginners

Somerset Community College's Tractor-Trailer / Commercial Driver Training course is designed for individuals with little or no commercial driving experience. The program includes all the learning tools needed to pass the Class “A” CDL driver’s test.

What you will get:

  • A learner’s permit
  • Endorsement preparation and DOT rules and regulations
  • Vehicle inspection, log books, map-reading, trip planning, and complete vehicle training to prepare for an entry-level position in the trucking industry
  • Class “A” CDL road test and a certificate awarded upon completion

The course consists of 160 hours and may be completed in approximately 4 weeks. Classes are 40 hours per week, Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with an hour for lunch and two 15- minute breaks.

Admission and Tuition

Requirements for admission include: ability to read, write and speak the English language, pass a Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, pass a drug screen, and have a valid driver’s license at the time of class registration. A high-school diploma or GED is not required. The program may train individuals 18 and over, but has limited job-placement assistance resources for individuals under the age of 21. It is recommended that the student obtain a copy of their Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) from the Circuit Court Clerk’s office prior to starting the program.

The cost of the program is $4,000 and covers the cost of the DOT physical, drug screen, instruction permit, and Kentucky Commercial Driver’s License fee. In addition to personal financing, Somerset accepts WIOA - Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funding assistance, TAA – Trade Adjustment Assistance, and assistance via Kentucky Farm Worker Programs.

We'll help you make the right choices and prepare for a great start to your trucking career.
