Truck Parking

Maybe buy a kingpin lock and get approval from the truck stop to drop the trailer while on home time and park just the tractor at your house, that way you can keep an eye on it and start it a couple times throughout the day to prevent dead batteries and gelling? just food for thought. anyway I park in my yard, (2 acres of grass and gravel) unless its been raining then I just park on the road half in grass half on road. Gotta love living in the boonies.

Wanting to become a truck driver...

Does anyone know anything about Swift? Are they a good company to drive for??? I kept seeing an ad for them on the side of my facebook page so I decided to fill out an app for them to contact me.....any comments?

As with any big company everyone has different opinions of good. It really is up to how you are and what not. You could get a DM you absolutely hate. and that will effect if the company is good or bad, even though it has nothing to do with the actual company. eyes of the beholder. Swift is a big company, they've been around for a while. They have trucks and loads to be given. So in my opinion they are a good company. The equipment is good and the miles are there. You wont make a whole lot of money your first year because you are new but after that you will see decent money. Swift has different fleets aswell and they have lease and owner ops.

Studying for the learner's permit

What worked for me was reading the cdl book from the DMV and writing it down in a note pad and highlighting the important stuff.I am currently studying the high road on this site to finish up the rest of my endorsements. good luck bud, I know you can get this out of the way and move on to the best part, getting behind the wheel and shifting those gears.

Trucking

Heck yeah, It's always good to see another coal blower get into this industry for the right reasons. Getting into something you love is almost like never working another day in your life. Welcome to trucking and be safe and keep the shiny side up. If you havn't already check out Pumpkindriver.com, I think it's the site where you orange truckers have to talk to other oranges.

Straight Talk do they deliver good service on the road???

I used straight talk when I first started driving. It did what it was suppose to do. Some spots like all other carriers were dead zones. but for the most part it did great. and Guyx you are lucky. unlimited data from verizon lol wish I had that

How do the TT.com web site questions compare with the actual DPS questions?

I am staring my class at ACC here in Austin Texas next week 2/3. I have started reading the book(CDL Book) then taking the on line tests. I find my self gravitating towards just doing the test and skimming the book for answers. I was reading on the web site, test-guide.com that some have had success and some have not. I noticed a difference in the questions and I was curious of anyone's advice for this particular web sites Q&A's.

When I had to study for my test, I just got a note pad and the CDL booklet from the DMV. and read the required sections. Than I went back and copied the required sections I just had read. I got 100% on General, Air brakes and combo. I am in the process of studying for my (X) Endorsement, which is Combination Hazmat.

Lurkers!

double-quotes-start.png

lol Almost sounds like the recruitment ad I seen and signed my life away on that dotted line. UNCLE sam wants YOU!

double-quotes-end.png

Agreed! The funny thing though is we are not the military. We are not recruiters. We come in peace. We are the good guys here to help! If you are going to sign up for anything, then sign up for us. I am extending an open invitation on behalf of all of us here on TT. Quit being a girl and sign up already. I dare ya! I do not know if you really got in in you! I want to see a lurker prove me wrong and reply back to me. I am waiting...

Yes sign up, What's the worst that can happen? Someone answers a question about trucking honestly and from experience? We aren't those truckers with a sour patch attitude. We know a company isn't bad because we left it. We know not every four wheler is a bad person because they are risking their lives cutting in front of me and ruining my wrangle jeans. or making me spill my big ol' bag of M&M's (shaddup I like my candy when I drive its a bad habit I know) It takes literately less than 5 minutes to sign up. And once you do you will have access to real truck drivers from all over the board ranging from box/reefer pullers to skateboard awesomeness to suicide jockeys and tanker yankers. Info on Company sponsored schools compared to Private schools. Companys that will Students right out of CDLA school.

What is the best inverter or CB? what sort of cooking devices should I bring. Which company allows pets (I have had a dog with me since I started I highly recommend brining a pup it makes it much more enjoyable and forces you to get out and exercise)

And if you join and reply to this Topic as your first post on TT EVER, I will send you a invisible non existent Cookie. How can you pass that up?

Trucking

Yes, one thing i've notice about TT is and I catch myself doing it all the time. You know that one friend you have that has one subject he is overly excited about? well the guys and gals here at TT are that one friend many over and our subject is 80,000lbs coal burning hunks of shinyness with loud air horns (I got into trucking for the air horns) and the only stupid question is the one you DIDN'T ask. Only one way to learn buddy and trust me, when I started I wish I would of known about this site.open that laptop and fire those fingers up because there are a lot of questions new drivers should ask these old school drivers. learning from a driver that drove back in the day is the best, my trainer was a 20+ year vet and buddy let me tell you. It shows on the road in how to handle your self and those around you. ASK AWAY!!!!

Driving a regular car felt kind of strange after getting off the truck.

IDK, I park my tractor in my driveway, First thing I do is I get on my old motocross bike and take her for a spin. now driving my truck is a whole different story. messing up the gears because the pattern isn't the same. and driving to slow because it has that affect of going super fast when a tractor at 70mph looks like its going slow when you look out the window. Don't even get me started on trying to back my 14ft enclosed trailer up. impossible. Give me a 49,000 pound 10'2 split and tell me to blind side in a tight spot. no problem. control 14ft of trailer on home time. wont happen.
