Changing companies how to handle

The position was open at the local depot, only required a year of experience. The hours and home time are no better for the delivery drivers, shuttle seems like a lot better gig. We actually have a decent amount of delivery guys that moved there from shuttle, they didn’t like it for whatever reason. Maybe they didn’t like running doubles or maybe with the delivery component pay they have the ability to make more money. No seniors or drivers that couldn’t cut it doing deliveries on our crew…

How did you get your position? Seems like a tough gig to get. The shuttle guys on my account are either senior citizens or young guys who couldn't handle it as a delivery driver.

There are drop and hook positions in food service 😉

After rereading the original post though I thought that is what he was referring to and its what I currently do but I believe I misread it. Still though, food service companies employ more than just delivery drivers, like our shuttle team who operates similar to linehaul. Doesn’t seem like the OP is going to respond but curious if that’s the type of position he was talking about, if so I would highly recommend it… the job not the two week trial.

Hey Bobcat, that's a good and legitimate response. I probably was not clear in my meaning.

My concerns are that there seems a lack of commitment to what it is he wants to switch into. He seems to want to go try something new for two weeks and then decide whether to stay or jump ship. That doesn't seem a good approach to me.

Local work is great and takes as big a commitment as any OTR driver has. When I see someone who doesn't seem to make much distinction between a drop & hook job versus a food service job, I start to wonder what it is they really want out of trucking. I always think it best to know what you want and then go for it. That involves commitment.

Which food service company? I’m a shuttle driver at PFG which is similar to linehaul and our runs are mostly the same daily. Home daily, every weekend off… love it. I wouldn’t recommend a leave/trial to anyone in any industry. Would you be running doubles? Most of the big food service companies do.

What tripped you up?

I have definitely lost some items after setting them down on the dot bumper and/or my dolly. A really nice spotlight was my last… that one hurt.

Drug questions

I used recreationally on a regular basis before making the transition from LTL management to driving. It’s no big deal if you have your mind made up and your priorities straight.

Kind of a silly thread telling people that have used drugs in the past to go find another profession. If they plan on continuing to use then that’s a different story.

Challenging driving scenarios

PFG has driver facing cameras and although I was hesitant about it at first the job was just too good to pass up, it had everything I was looking for.

People make them sound worse than they are, at least imho. Nobody is sitting watching a live stream of you driving… even if your doing something you shouldn’t be you get a warning beep before it actually sends in a video clip for review. I’ve only set mine off a couple times, if you keep your eyes where they should be then it’s like it’s not even there 👍🏻

Murphy’s Law

How long have you been driving now Bruce? And you still need people to tell you to do a proper trip plan. If it were me I would have identified those issues before accepting the assignment and immediately calling my dispatch. I would not have put myself in that situation to begin with.

And if something out of my control happened and I ended up in a similar situation I would not have used PC to get to and complete my delivery, nor would I have used it again afterwards to go get my trailer washed out.

You just got a decent ticket, you would think you would be being more careful when it comes to protecting your CDL. If you found my original response inappropriate I apologize but it seems you like to play the dumb act when you already know better which was my point. You already knew you were wrong and you already knew what you should have done to begin with but here we are.

You know your abusing it and using it incorrectly… why would you even post this?

Did you really read my post? I explained why I posted.

Others like yourself may not be willing or able to put your ego aside and be candid about your mistakes or inadequacies. Not only have I received great information and instruction as a result of my posting, but I’m sure other new or relatively new drivers have benefited from what has been taught by the experienced drivers. I thought that was one of the purposes and great benefits of this forum. And FYI, you don’t have to read my posts if they bug you and you have nothing constructive to add to the conversation.

Except for Klutch, I really have appreciated the objective advice given. The response from Chief Brody was the one that really stood out to me and I now have a better understanding about situations like this. So thanks to everyone especially the Chief.

Murphy’s Law

I have no problem owning up to or discussing the mistakes I have made. When I look at your OP I don’t see this as a “mistake” you made, not some accident or error unless you mean an error in judgement.

Using PC to extend your drive time to get to a delivery, to go get a trailer wash out… I mean come on.

I guess it can be a good talking point… great discussion on what not to do. Smarten up. This stuff has a way of catching up to people.

Local or OTR?

As soon as I got my year in OVR I moved to a local job as well. Home daily, all weekends off and I make more than I ever did OVR… ide never go back to that personally.
