Graduated today

Yay that parts over, but heres the thing. I got a job offer while in school unrelated to truck driving and I want to experience that first. I am nervous however because I will lapse some time if the job doesn't pan out and I want to go on the road. I need advice here because I don't want to screw myself getting a trucking job in the future by taking this job first. I was told by a recruiter that companies give new grads 30 days to start or else your screwed is this true? If so then I need to make a big decision quick. I just don't feel i'm ready to hit the road just yet and that's why I took this other job. Any help will be much appreciated

Today is my 4th day of Orientation.

You learn what you learn in school to give you a foundation on what driving a truck is like. Think of CDL school as a intro class and now your learning the company and the real world way of doing things.

My cousin got his CDL a month or so ago from a private school

Southwest truck driver training provided 160 hour courses and there have been others joining for less time but they needed to for the ops reason above.

Schneider must not be hiring right now :-)

Just doing some research and had a few questions and I have called their 2-800 recruiting number now 7 times this last week and cannot get through. Left 2 voicemails 48 hours which have been unanswered. Anybody have a better number for their recruiting?

I had the same problem with prime inc. they said all recruiters were with other drivers and to hold. I continued to hold for 25 minutes before giving up. I filled out an application online and within 3 days received a call from a recruiter. So if you want to drive for scneider I would suggest to fill out an application online and someone will contact you

Week-1 of 4 complete.

What a week. TEST TEST TEST is what its all about. This week we went through the manual and went chapter by chapter. 10 hours in a class room just getting information jammed into our heads. I averaged a 96 through this week in school and then took the DMV tests today and passed all 5 tests. Gen Know. Combo, airbrakes, doubs and trips, and tankers. All in all it was a long week, the guys in class with me are cool so it makes time go by faster.

The only piece of advice I can offer to anyone thinking of going to Truck school is to go to the DMV pick up your manual about a month before you are due to start and then read it cover to cover and highlight highlight highlight. Then come online here to either truckingtruth.com or type in google(cdl practice test) and find some practice tests to take it will make the 1st week go by so much easier. I can't really speak for other schools but the school I am in they just essentially read the powerpoint and show movies.

Week 2 will consist of Logbook training, fed regs. and other things so it's one more 4 day week until pre trip begins.

This is all coming easy to me for 1 reason. I pre studied before I arrived. Also I was a firefighter in the AF so I kinda had cdl experience without formal training.

Starting school tomorrow(first post)

Why do I read about a lot of negativity towards truck schools? I hope I am not wrong but I don't see where it will be hard for me. I am not trying to be ****y I am just stating that I have already begun studying, so the next two weeks will be reinforcement. I am good hands on so I am more excited than nervous to get started

Starting school tomorrow(first post)

Hey all my name is Jim I am starting truck school tomorrow. Spent 8 yrs in the AF driving firetrucks so I have an idea of what a pre trip inspection to include airbrakes will be like however It stops there.

I have already read the CDL manual and got tired of highlighting. I have also been preparing by taking the valuable tests of the internet to include the gen. knowledge test and airbrakes tests. I am doing very well. But anyway tomorrow will begin what I hope to be a fun and rewarding career in the trucking industry.
