King pin won't latch

Today, I was trying to back under a trailer and I could not for the life of me get my kingpin to latch all the way. I had that little 2" shiny spot that you can tell it isn't locking all the way. What are some tips and tricks for dealing with this problem during the winter?

if truckers were provided faster wifi at $5hr per usage, at a truck stop would you or any trucker you know pay for that?

Maybe not $5, but a couple bucks is worth it to me.

1st Year Pay: Breakdown

So you CAN start getting quarterly increases separate from your anniversary raises, but they won't give you decreases based on performance until your third quarter. Since you have to have two down quarters in a row to get a decrease, any decreases wouldn't happen until your fourth quarter.

It's pretty easy to move up starting out since they work on the "performance points" system. As a newbie, you start out low and improve gradually, so pretty much every quarter for me has been an up quarter.

Those pay increases probably become a lot harder to achieve after your first year because your quarterly performance will cap out and then start to fluctuate more instead of always increasing. At some point it becomes impossible to physically turn any more miles. Also, I'm not sure where Roehl cpm caps out at. I am currently on pay level 6 out of 10 (as of last quarter. End of year results won't be in until probably third week of january), but my employee handbook's pay tables must be out of date, because I am making $0.045 cpm more than it says I should be. They must have increased their pay at some point after these books were made. Otherwise I would upload the tables so you could check it out for yourself.

Hope this helps.

1st Year Pay: Breakdown

New CDL Grad starting orientation with Roehl on 1/19 (Van)

Question on your cpm increases, more specifically your raises. Beside the 2 automatic raises that I know you get for certain service time periods, are your other increases your Quarterly raises?

I had the understanding that you don't start to qualify for the raises till AFTER your last automatic raise; so basically your 9th month. but it appears that you were qualifying and getting them much sooner. Are they easy to get because I would think as a rookie driver that the raises would be minimal due to inefficiencies that would come with learning the job. So if you're were able to get to .415 cpm at 11 months is fantastic in my opinion. Great Job. Does that mean getting similar or better 2nd year raises are very probable....or do they keep "raising the bar" due to becoming more proficient at the job? or is the "bar" the same throughout? Do most drivers qualify for at least the minimum quarterly raise?

Any info you have would be great as I am not clear about this..

Thanks

Here is section from the employee handbook:

"To minimize the concern about your pay while you're still learning the job, your performance points score will not be used to determine your mileage pay rate during your first full calendar quarter of employment. Instead, you will receive a mileage pay rate increase of $0.02 on the 3 month anniversary of your Phase II graduation date, and another $0.02 increase on the 6 month anniversary.

During the second full calendar quarter following your graduation date, if your performance would procure a higher mileage pay rate based on the applicable pay table, your mileage rate will be set at that higher rate, and that will also establish your pay and performance level.

However, if your performance would procure a lower mileage pay rate based on the applicable pay table, your mileage pay rate will not go down. Your current mileage pay rate will be used to establish your pay level, and your performance will be used to establish your performance level.

In the third full quarter following your graduation date, your performance will determine any further pay changes"

Company Sponsored Training

The best thing would be to try and stick it through for the duration of your contract. What is it about flatbed that isn't for you? If you leave before that is fulfilled you will owe tuition costs for the schooling (in the contract you signed they should have given you a dollar amount).

That said, you asked if you could quit and still go to any company. Short answer would be yes. A lot of companies only hire people with 6 months or a year OTR experience, but there are plenty others that will take inexperienced drivers and you could probably easily find another job.

Pocket knives ?

I carry a really small Old Timer pal. Think the blade is 2.5". I know when I've been to Canada, when asked about having weapons I told them I have it. Their main concern is always that it not be a switchblade. I've never had any problems.

New to the world Of trucking

Hi I'm new to the trucking Buissness I need some help though I'm going to get my class A license Commercial. But it's due to My job. I'm driving a Ford F-450 Turbo disel truck with a Flat bed on it and A trailer to haul A Mini Excavator. I hear things about weight and stuff come into play and the type of truck License you carry. But I'm not sure If going Class A is the way. Any help? Advice.

If your trailer when loaded is ever going to weight more that 10,000lb total, you will need a CDL A.

CDL A: If your truck or truck/trailer combination weight more than 26,001 lbs and your trailer will ever hold greater than 10,000lbs you will need this

CDL B: If your truck or truck/trailer combination weighs more than 26,001 lbs but your trailer will never weigh over 10,000lbs, you will need this.

I have a class ,a,liscense

I'm retired but I want,to return back to work I want,to make some extra money I have class a license but I don't know how to drive I hurt myself while training should I go to a school or find co,that will train me.

You are saying you have a CDL A, but you can't drive a rig, right? How did you get the license and are their any restrictions on it?

A lot of times when someone has a big gap between driving jobs, they can still get hired on at a company the company will just require them to take a one week refresher course to get used to driving a truck again. Do you have any experience driving a truck or no? If not, whether you choose company sponsored training or a technical school depends on your situation. There are pros and cons to both.

With a technical school you will likely have more training time behind the wheel and you will have a greater choice of companies after finishing. The con is that you have to have the funds to pay that tuition up front, if you don't that might not be a possible option at all.

Company sponsored programs are usually acceleared so you will get on the road faster and you don't have to have money to pay tuiton (some companies will even pay you during your training). But, you won't have as many company options since most companies don't offer schooling and you will be required to sign a contract to complete a certain lenght of time or number of miles with that company.

You will have to evaluate your own circumstances to decide what is best for you.
