Brett, thank you for that. You can see how new I am. My line of thinking was if it makes you unsafe on the road in a storm, make yourself safe. I never have done that, and because I love my job, will never do that. Because of the seriousness of the consequence for doing such things, I am very sorry for the poor advice. My intentions were for the good though. Again Brett, thanks for pointing that out. Sorry again for the bone head advice. I going with, it's a rookie mistake!

It looks likevRoehl wants you to find a secure location by your house. Ernie has good advice. Youbcan even check with some dinners. I know a few by me, that have a big lot for trucks too, and will let you park there while the home.

Usually your company will work with you to find the most efficient spot, depending on their resources.what company are you with?

Mobileye

I've been putting up with this thing for over 2 years now. If this device was a living creature I would destroy it in a bitter rage even if it meant prison. I hate it with a passion and think it's the most dangerous thing to put on a truck.

Think I'm nuts? Wait until a 4 wheeler cuts you off on an iced road and that thing SLAMS on the brakes for you. This thing has almost killed me on more than one occasion.

Just stick some tape on the front of the radar and it won't be able to calibrate and be used. I would think though thet the road grime from salt snow, ice, and slush would be enough to screw with it.

I personally like our on guard. But it might a bit different then the mobile eye. The warning beeps can get annoying but it keeps you alert. The whole ice think yeah l, there should be a way disable it for situations like this. That would only make sense!

Experienced just not recent

Most companies will want you to take a simple refresher. I know a buddy of mine stopped driving in 2000, and said he just needed to take a two week 40 hour refresher. good-luck.gif

Graduated TDI,. about to head off to Stevens Transport for my first CDL Job...

Congrats man! That seemed like an intense first day. Question...the people that failed, were they able to work with the trainers then retake it or were they sent home? Did they do the DOR physical, and do they have an agility type test? Just curious. Good luck, and sounds like your having a blast! I thought about them before I went to Schneider. I like the fact that they hook their drivers up with nice hoodies in the truck, but the home time didn't work for what I wanted.

A bit overwhelming

That is a plus....one on one! I had to wait 3.5 hours for a 10 minute turn in the truck!

Take it a day at a time, be a sponge and soak it all up! After you pass your CDL, go through the orientation of your employer and start working....it will all click! You will learn as you go.

Automatics in Winter question?

I just watched a video on Schneider crossroads as they are getting their drivers ready for winter descents in bad weather. This is for the D-12 automated transmission. When you are about descend a mountain get to the speed you want to safely descend. They say 20mph is a safe speed to keep slight constant brake pressure without over heating the brakes. Chou flip the switch to lick the trans in the gear so it doesn't upshift. If you start to slide, the abs will automatically disengage the engine from the drive wheels, just like if you were to press the clutch in on a manual.

What did you do before becoming a truck driver?

I am 34, I've been a welder/fabricator, auto mechanic, cashier, real estate agent, overnight stock, and a fast food manager not in that order.

I have always wanted to be a tractor trailer driver. Shoot, every man on moms side retired from truck driving, are doing dispatch now, or are still driving! It's been a part of my family I believe since the 40's, I would like to now proof myself, and live an aventourous life!
