There's a school locally I can go to to get a CDL I'm seriously considering. Now I know a lot of trucking jobs in general have you on the road throughout the country for long periods of time etc. But wouldn't getting a CDL open other driving jobs as well? Something that isn't nessiarily a tractor trailer OTR job? Like driving for coca - cola or something. Or at least getting the CDL would give me the options of tractor trailer companies because I didn't go to THEIR specific company trainning....

I ask because I'd like to at least stay in the same state I live in (Texas) for a job. My barber told me about her friend who got a job driving for Goodwill because he just came out of CDL school here.

Let me be pre precise I mean like driving big vehicles in general. Like for furniture companies, or grocery companies etc. Not just the general big tractor trailer companies. Wouldn't various companies see my CDL license as a plus and want me to drive for them?

Guys sign a contract with the school,to work at a certain rate for one year. They get their cdl,then return home to drive a dump truck,garbage truck etc,for $20 per hour...dishonest. Most companies try to get a load toward your home,so they dont have to dead head you 500 miles. 500 miles ÷7mpg=70 gallons× $3 per gallon=$210 Ive been away since febuary,been home 2 days.

Unfortunately, trucking is not right for your situation.A company is not going to train you,and send you home,2 days each week.You can get your cdl,and screw the school,and find a local job..many scum bags go this route. You can lease a truck,make the $1000 weekly payment,pay for fuel,and go home,when you like. most companies want you to run 3-4 weeks,then you might get a few days off...and dont expect them to fall perfectly on sat-sun.

Im not understanding your post completely. What do you mean "screw the school, and scumbags?". And i didnt NEED sat sun off, it was just an example.

Hello, I am new to this forum! I live in East, TX.

I've been unemployed since April because I got laid off from a company that went bankrupt so I've been taking unemployment for months now. Now I told myself I don't just want to take any old sorry job out there, I'd like something I can do and would want to do. I've done retail jobs for the most part of my adult life.

Then I had to make a big car repair payment last week and it really hurt my wallet and it REALLY got me to thinking: "man I needed a really good job that pays well, I don't think typical (fake) retail jobs will cut for me right now". So being a truck driver has seriously been considered for me lately as I hear it can pay really well.

Few questions:

1. If I actually became a trucker for a while do I HAVE to do it Full Time? Or are there companies to where I don't have to work ALL the time? Like make sure I have at least two days off a week? (weekends?) I ask this because I hear you have to really dedicate yourself to this career field and it seems you'd be on the road for large chucks at a time. I have a (girlfriendish lol) and I'd like to be able to spend time with her still here and there.

2. I want to go back to school too so, if I am on the road for this job would it even ever be feasible to do my online classes on my down time driving? I know getting good sleep for this job is mandated.

I hope I don't seem silly, maybe I'm just asking for too much. But I'd like to see what all I could juggle while also getting a good new job started. What are yalls thoughts? Thanks XD
