Classes start on the 18th.

Well after a few months of preparing and getting health stuff in order I am finally starting CDL classes on the 18th at the truck driver Institute in southern Indiana. I would like to thank all the active users on this website that have giving me valuable information about trucking. And giving a honest insight into the life of a trucker. Wish me luck!

Anyone know a company out of vegas or that hires from there that has good miles and APUs?

Thanks for replying, I looked into them when I was starting OTR. I got used to driving dry van and don't know if I'd want to do reefer. I might reconsider if I don't find a decent dry van company with apus or just stick it out where I am till i get enough exp to go to a better place.

Also I found you can do just about what you want with inverters as well. No they won't run a refrigerator or a large microwave but you can use a small microwave on them and use a TV and some other appliances. I know Swift is installing inverters on their new 2016 trucks and they hire just about everywhere. Basically there are a lot more companies with inverters in their vehicles then there are with APUs.

Gaming and internet help on the road

Okay I see now. I've tested the internet at a TA a few months ago and it worked quite well. But from what I'm reading here that is not the norm. So for gaming you need 1 megabit speeds with a low ping. So 4G and 3G is plenty fast enough. I calculated the bandwidth usage of World of Warcraft over a week of raiding and also played few rounds of Call of Duty and found that I use a average of 6MB an hour of data on World of Warcraft and about 4MB on Call of Duty. So if you were to play about six hours a day 7 days a week you would use up about 1.1 gigabytes of data in a month. So a 2GB plan would be plenty for just gaming. If you want to do any web surfing or stream video you would probably want a bigger plan.

Gaming and internet help on the road

I have done significant Research into this and found that most truck stops have Wi-Fi. The cost is about the same as you would get through a cable provider or lan line provider. So if your preference is like a Flying J truck stop get your internet through them. Even if you find yourself at a truck-stop you don't normally stop at like a TA. You can purchase internet by the hour and the pricing is not terrible.

TA uses Interstate SpeedZone and the price is 60 minutes = $1.99, 24 hours = $4.79, 1 month = $19.99, 1 year = $149.99

Pilot Flying J uses Wandering WiFi and the price is 1 Day - $2.99/299 Pts, 31 Days - $19.99/1999 Pts, 365 Days - $99.99/9999 Pts

Hope this helps

Anyone know a company out of vegas or that hires from there that has good miles and APUs?

Hello, thanks for reading my post. I am wondering if anyone knows of any company that I can look into that hires in Las Vegas that has decent miles/pay and offers APUs. I have 19 months driving exp, 9 of them OTR 11 Western for the most part. I'd like to still run 11 western. I don't mind running hard as I often do 500-650 miles a day when possible and work my 14s with no problem

Check with prime. I think they hire just about everywhere and they have APUs.

Sleep apnea question

double-quotes-start.png

172 is pretty high. I don't think White Coat Syndrome can make your blood pressure spike that much. Try going by Walgreen or Walmart and check it on their machines. you can buy a digital blood pressure thing at Walmart for $30 to monitor it. The good news is that it is a easy fix. I take lisinopril for High Blood Pressure and the pills are cheap even without insurance.

I agree, it's very high. I've never had an issue with my blood pressure til now. I know it's manageable, it's just one more thing preventing me from moving forward. Preventing, not stopping.

Buddy I know exactly where you are and how you feel right now. I started working on this 7 months ago I knew I had high blood pressure and got that solved before the test it wasn't until the dot physician told me I needed a sleep apnea test then I realized I had sleep apnea. And it was quite severe at that. I finally got all that solved and under control and you'll get there too. Just stick with it you'll be a healthier person after this is all said and done. I feel like a whole new person now!

Possible Solution to Driver Shortage?

How about ease up on this crap with personal vehicles. If sombody has an accident in their personal vehicle it shouldn't ruin their career.

I can understand that if it's just one accident. But if you have a two or more accidents within a certain period of time and your fault then you shouldn't be trusted behind the wheel of a 80000 pound missile on wheels.

This is also why we can't trust kids that are under 21 behind the wheel of a truck. They just haven't had anytime to gain enough experience behind the wheel of a normal car. I think a lot of them but not all of them still have the sense of invincibility and take unnecessary risk. At that age I couldn't even trust myself behind the wheel of one of those trucks.

Sleep apnea question

Thanks Michael C. I went to the VA today and they printed out the report from my old machine. They were pretty shocked at the machine I was using...Apparently it's a 2004 model. They gave me a brand new machine that can produce reports remotely and it's soooooo quiet! I felt like it was Christmas all over again.

Next, my DOT physical this weekend. Other than my apnea I should pass with no problems. Fingers crossed.

Glad i could help! What model did you get? I got the aircurve 10 vauto and I love it.
