Preparing to go to trucking school!

I was stationed at Fort Richardson from 02-07 and worked on the North Slope from 07-16. I'm in Tn since 2008 but kind of wish I never left Ak.

Maverick does have an excellent flatbed division and their training and training facility are top notch. I'm sure there are other good ones but Maverick is worth considering.

I agree with the others about taking advantage of the training aids.

I studied the tests on this site and when I got to school I literally knew every answer on the tests we took in class. Made going over the subject matter in class kind of boring but the tests were a breeze. They're also the same questions that will be on the tests you take at the DMV.

I wouldn't commit to team driving until you've been out with a trainer. That'll give you a sense of what team driving would be like. Keep in mind that you and the trainer will be up at the same time. As a team driver you'll be trying to sleep while someone else drives, backs, gets in/out of the truck, gets lost or cusses at traffic, listens to the radio, sets the air brakes, farts, belches, etc.

As far as which company to consider I don't have much to offer. I used the GI Bill to go to school and applied to companies after completion.

I will say that if you're considering flatbed, Maverick Transportstion is a good company. They're based out of N. Little Rock, Ar. I'm not sure if they train to hire but it's a legit company and would be a great place to learn the ropes if they do offer training.

Good luck

Nobody will hire me after termination. Should I give up on trucking?

Thanks everybody for the replies. I was able to find a new company after their recruiters told me no four times in a row. Recruiters can be some of the Most incompetent people I swear to God.

Keep that to yourself. Letting them know your honest opinion can make them less likely to help you out if you ever need it. You attract more bees with honey.

The Wife Of A New Trucker

Is that $1500/week flat pay or can he exceed that amount with more miles? I've never heard of a flat rate unless he travels only up to a certain amount of miles per week and no more for regional and OTR drivers. Daycab/home daily drivers may get a flat rate.

There are a lot of other factors that can impact what a driver is paid. Detention pay, break down pay, etc.

Not implying what you're saying is incorrect, just curious.

The Wife Of A New Trucker

I've known guys who literally live in their trucks. They're single and saving lots of money for retirement. They were at my last job where we started and ended at thecsame distribution center everyday. They had a fridge, shower, tv, etc at their disposal. They weren't in their truck out on the road somewhere. They also had their personal vehicles parked on site so they could go places when off duty.

I've also known married men who would stay out for 2 or more months at a time then go home for a week or so to be with their families. It's not for me but it can be done.

There are hourly paid jobs but the ones I know of are daycab positions where you're home everyday. Most OTR jobs are mileage based pay. Even the truck lease jobs I knew of were mileage paid jobs.

Smoked weed 5 months ago can I get cdl

B Y has an idea:

I was thinking about suggesting cutting his hair.

I have heard that if you cut all the body hair off ("super bald"?) amounts to refusal to take the hair follicle test. Do you want to find out? Trucking Truth wants to know.

Did you not read my post beyond suggesting he cut his hair?

I was suggesting he cut his hair and in 3 months, after it's grown and 8 months since he last did weed, get tested.

I was thinking about suggesting cutting his hair. By the time it's 1.5" long it'll have been around 8 months since he did weed. That should be plenty of time IMO. I wouldn't be afraid after being clean that long.

Point taken. They did do a hair follicle test when I hired on with Maverick. They took it from my chest IIRC. It definitely wasn't from my bald head.
