Contracts

I began my trucking career with Roehl on 6 October 2015. I drove for them for nearly 6 months before my son and I teamed together with Covenant which lasted an additional 6 months b4 hiring on with Empire in which I have been there for the past year. Just now I received a phone call from a debt collector saying I owed them aprox. $2500.00 for formal training. Understand I paid for my CDL out of pocket... I asked them to produce a contract with my signature. They did produce the contract but the signature looked nothing like my signature. They now have reported this to a credit agency and now have damaged my otherwise impeccable credit rating.... I need some advice for which way to go from here. All replies welcome...

Three different employers... during your first year in the industry... it's not surprising you can't remember/wasn't able to keep track of everything.

Is it really that bad?

I'll try to make this as brief as possible. I'm 25 years old, my father has been in the trucking business for 35+ years. For about 10 of those years he was an O/O. Ever since I was a kid, when I rode with him on summer breaks he told me to not get into trucking. (He primarily did local sand/gravel hauling for the quarrys)

I've always wanted to be a business owner or self employed. Not even a year out of high school I started a pressure washing business and have been doing it ever since...the money is alright but I have been wanting to get out. Sick of working in the summer heat, long hours then to come home and just do quotes the rest of the night. The worst part of it for me is selling, i'll admit im not that great at it. I'm one of those shy, introvert type of people. Just looking for a change to something that fits me a little better.

i've always felt trucking was a bit in my blood. The idea has came back to me several times in the past few years. What is holding me back is how my dad has talked about it from as far back as I can remember.

What's your question?

Recommendations on a Truck Driving School

This is my situation. I'm seriously considering becoming a truck driver. Had many different jobs in my lifetime, but driving a truck by far, was my favorite. Currently have my Class B license. Looking for advice on a school? I'm 57 years old. I'm looking for a free school with a one year contract after completion. I want to learn to drive all stick shift models of trucks as well. Appreciate in advance any help you can give me. Not trying to be lazy here. I understand you have this information on this website, but am looking for your honest opinion based on my situation.

Thank you,

Sincerely,

Joe

Rather than start with selecting "a school," in my "honest opinion," you should research the trucking companies, in general, with an eye towards who you may want to eventually work for... and then investigate that/those company sponsored training programs.

Is everyone aware the ATA has lobbied for "anti-trucker" wages? Urgent!

This FAA bill is scheduled to be voted on THIS MONTH. Truckers are urged to call the Govt. switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask their reps to REMOVE Anti-Trucker wage amendments.

The basis for your alarm has been discussed in other threads. Here we go again...

Update and info for prime newbies

Everyone is busy... best to always be brief, bright and relevant. I never call my dispatcher, QC is so much more efficient. If he wants/needs to chat, he calls me.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle

Wow. Thanks for the replies everyone.

So something is bothering me now. Crockpots and electric coolers?? Are there outlets inside these trucks or something? Or do I need special equipment. (Yeah, as you can see, making the decision to go into trucking was...Random). But if there are those of you who are living off of greens and are going to walmart, then I can see how beneficial that would be. I guess I would spend the first few paychecks eating out before I could purchase myself some of the good electric stuff you're recommending.

Thanks for all the feedback, I really appreciate it. I'll def invest in some dumbbells and get my work out on.

My truck, like most, has multiple outlets. USB, 12v and 110v. I run Satellite TV/DVR, laptop, microwave, built in fridge/freezer, crock pot, phone/tablet chargers, etc.

Check out my company, Millis. You will have no problem getting an automatic KW, T680. We are 100% no touch, dry van freight and getting home every 2-3 weeks will not be a problem with our home time gaurantee. You get 1.5 days home for every week out. If they are late getting you home, you earn an extra 5 CPM until you are home, but you will very likely never be late getting home if you request your time off properly.

What lanes do you normally run with millis

I'm OTR, solo for a little over one year. We have about 800 trucks, all KW. Millis is privately held, family owned and run since the 30s.

We typically don't go west of Minnesota/Texas, although I have run to Colorado. We also seldom go to the Northeast, although I have been to Long Island and Union New Jersey. You get paid extra for New York and I think you can refuse it if you want. We also don't do much Florida, although I have run to Orlando. Other than those areas, we run pretty much all over the Midwest, South and Mid-Atlantic.

We haul a lot of adult beverages... from breweries to distributors, distributors to breweries, breweries to breweries, distributors to distributors, etc. In addition, we haul a lot of things relating to the production of said, e.g. glass, paper, etc. We also haul many other things, not relating to beverages, but you will notice our terminals are all close to a large brewery.

There is info on this site about Millis and the Millis web site has a lot of what you may want to know. Also, you can just call recruiting and they will answer your questions.

Private schools in Virginia

Why do you want to use a private school vs a company sponsored program? Just curious.
