Need advice on path to cdl

Steve All the advice that Brett, Errol and TMan has given you is spot on. Brett has created the best website on the Internet for all the information you will need about trucking and CDL schools Private and company sponsored programs, and training for obtaining your CDL A permit along with any endorsements you may want.

I am currently at the Swift training academy in Memphis. I am from KY I take my DMV test here next Tuesday some of the others in my class went back to their home state such as SC to do their road training and DMV test.

The program here is excellent Swift covered my transportation here and they will send me back home. there is no money upfront for the school. It has cost me about $400 to be here for 3 weeks.

Not trying to persuade you to choose Swift as there are several other companies that offer CDL training as well. do your research and decide which one would be the best fit for you. All the information you need is right here on this website.

Good Luck!

Class A or Class B? Not sure what I want to do.

Mike if you are going to go to school for your CDL get the class A. I went through all the trouble, time, and money to get a class B. As that was what my job at the time required except for the job I was doing that class B was pretty much worthless.

When I started looking for another job to make more money most of the companies I looked at would only hire someone with a CDL A even tho they also had class B trucks. And the ones that would hire someone with a class B the pay wasn't any more than I was making and the benefits were less.

I am currently in my last days of school for my CDL A. Do it once that way you don't limit your opportunities.

Just my opinion.

Thanks Lemmy, yeah my road trainer told me the same thing. It is a wicked turn... I know I can do it, but like you said you can't safely make it with a vehicle in that turning lane.

Alex when you get your physical make sure you or your Dr. marks yes on the CDL and class A, if you are coming to swift you will get another physical if it isn't. Swift Academy in Memphis is excellent. It is very fast paced but all instructors are willing to help. I have had a good experience here and would recommend it to anyone...

Update. I know it's been awhile since I've been on here just been so tired when I get in every day a lot to learn in a short time.

Made it thru skills week boy was it hot out on that range. We have been on the road this week made it thru the week and passed my road evaluation.

DMV test next Tuesday I feel pretty good about it I know the pre trip like the back of my hand. Just have to remember no bone head mistakes. There is one turn on the road test that makes me a bit nervous and still have a little trouble with the 90. Practice some more on Monday and Tuesday morning.

Then hopefully I will be in orientation the following Tuesday at Greer. I've been told they have flatbed at that terminal and it's only 3 hours from my house.

You are exactly right Errol banging my head against the wall.

Thanks for the info and the pic. Errol I don't know if I'm turning to far to the right or not enough when I start out. I pull up to the line and turn about 1-11/2 to the right then start backing. Then as I move I start coming back to the left. And it goes all to heck from there... Lol
