I work for Prime and I have a friend here as well who lives in Pittsburg. He runs a dedicated account out of Chambersburg, PA and this allows him to get home about once a week or once every other week just depending on the season like if the freight is slow then they are able to get him home more often than the busy season. I know nothing of the other companies or what they offer, so all I can do is speak of Prime. But at Prime if you get tired of OTR and would like to get home maybe a little more often then our dedicated account in Chambersburg could be a good option for you.

I think I know if the one you are talking about. I passed through South Dakota yesterday and they had one open but it wasn't like the normal weigh stations off to the side. The one that was open when I passed through the state was different cause I had to get off of the interstate at a normal exit ramp like I'm going to enter the town and it was off to the north side of the interstate. I thought it was pretty strange and even asked the officer if it was necessary for me to exit the interstate for this weigh station and he said if the sign out there says open then yes I need to get off. I hope this makes you feel a little better knowing that it was an odd ball of a weigh station requiring me to exit the interstate and onto another state highway but like the other guys have said, gotta keep your eyes on those signs to know what's coming up. It's easy to get in that seat and start day dreaming so do what you need to stay alert. Another thing I like to do when I'm in unfamiliar territory is look at the atlas before I start my shift to see where the possible weigh stations are.

I live in the Shenandoah Valley which is the northern part of 81 in Virginia. No real big cities around with a rail yard to my knowledge.

Hey guys, it's about that time in my career where I start looking for a local job that gets me home each night. I know most of the member on here seem to be OTR but thought y'all might have knowledge on the local side of things as well.

In my neck of the woods we seem to have a lot of dry van freight with LTL companies. I was considering a P&D position with on of those carriers because I thought it would be mostly day time operating hours. Please correct me if my assumption is wrong.

Another option I was looking at was a straight truck or something of the like. I was thinking along the lines of dump truck. I really know nothing about this type of driving job and It only caught my eye because 1) looks like it would be as close to day time operations as I could get and I thought it would be less manual labor than P&D. Again, if my assumptions are wrong please tell me haha

Obviously, working normal day light hours is a big thing for me. I'm no stranger to working third shift but my reason for wanting to go home and get a local job is to spend more time with the family. For me, working third shift or running my 14 each day would sorta defeat the purpose of going home cause then I wouldn't be left with my family time. I'm currently an OTR driver so I understand the long hours trucking requires but like I said, I would like to maximize family time with a somewhat 'normal job'.

If there is something else you thing would fit my desires feel free to share them with me.

I don't live in South Carolina but when I lived to a different state I had to provide proof of residency. For my state, it was either a rental contract or a light/water bill.

This is why I like big companies. We can switch around and make changes all we want! Going from OTR to dedicated or swapping devisions is no big deal

I haven't noticed any problems. If it's a problem for you then i would say call Road Assist but other than that I don't know what to say.

That's cool man, where do you run? I know our intermodal guys stay in certain regions

Forgot to mention, you can get a full size condo while running OTR with Prime. If you do Walmart then they require a lightweight truck.
