Veteran Apprenticeship Program

No courses required anymore just a piece of paper that you have to sign monthly, showing how many miles and days you worked or something to that affect. You will receive BAH for wherever the head quarters is for the company, or whatever terminal they list with the VA. It is non taxed and non reportable income. It is drawn from your GI bill. You will receive 100% of the BAH the first six months and then 80% the second six months. It would further reduce by 20% if you did a two year apprenticeship. It is a legit program from the VA.

Yearly Pay Numbers for 2019

My last check isn't showing here so add another 4k to gross. First year hauling cars and with training and getting my routine down, I didn't start making "good money" until about April(started 1/6/2019). Ran about 70-75k miles or so. Hopefully 2020 is an even better year! Happy new year to all.

In search of new company

If you're interested in hauling cars, USAL has a terminal in Birmingham. Home weekends, chose your loads so opportunity to be home during the week if the freight allows. .65 cpm, 5 bucks a car front haul and 22 bucks back haul(there's more pay stuff but the list is too long). 136 hours of PTO from day one if you start in JAN and then prorated thereafter. Paid holidays off and all that good stuff.

Once you get the swing of things it's easy to gross 2k a week and then more if you bust your butt. Anything under 1.5k gross a week and you're just slacking and probably need to be terminated.

Rand mcnally or garmin

Rand took a dump so I gave garmin a try and am using it now. I've only had the garmin for a few days and I think the rand is much more user friendly but maybe I'm just not used to the garmin yet. I'd have stayed with the rand but it just stopped working. At first it would randomly shut off, then it would start freezing, and last it couldn't find where I was so I tossed it. I prefer google maps over all others though.

Why you slow down when you can't see very far ahead

Why would that 4 wheeler shoot infront of a semi like that.

Probably didn't see the truck coming up due to fog and was trying to change lanes because they were slowing down due to the accident or whatever was on the side of the road. The truck didn't have headlights on either which is stupid in those conditions. No accident if that truck slows down in the fog

I need recent TMC TR info. Please no sarcasm.

If nobody here can answer that question, a recruiter surely can. You don't have to tell them all of what you told us here, just ask the question along with the other 500 questions you will most likely have about the company. I asked a few recruiters the same question and it was not held against me.

Minor accident

I just popped the driver side hood mirror off another truck while blindsiding(a mistake to begin with).

The guy started to do a pretrip as I was backing and popped his hood open, I got out and looked, rolled down my windows, he stepped away from his truck. But I still hit the mirror, he never called out or anything, which was weird to me but still I shouldn't have even tried it, shoulda found another way, which I did after the fact.

Do you think I'll be fired? Just went solo 2 weeks ago.

If you are with a large carrier than no, but it will depend on your reaction. Show them that you know how to accept fault for your actions, what you learned from it, and how you will avoid this and other incidents from happening in the future. Large carriers are self insured for a reason and expect incidents such as this from their new drivers. Let it be a one time thing, learn from it, and keep trucking brother.

P.S. be careful how you explain the actions of the other driver, kind of sounds like you are blaming him for you hitting his truck.

ELD Malfunction

My biggest problem with going back to paper while on the road with an ELD malfunction is the DOT requires previous 8 days when running paper and if ELD quits where do you get previous 8 days until you get back to office, I had that problem last week for 2 days.

Your company has your last 8 days and can email or fax them to you. Your DM or safety should be able to help you out with that.

ELD Malfunction

Easy enough. What is the reg now for paper logs, seven days before your eld has to be back up and running? Not exactly sure so someone feel free to educate me or confirm please.
