Drivers license requirements

So I'm thinking about trucking, and I have a question. I live in the city (Chicago) and I use public transportation, I haven't had a regular drivers license in about 7 years. Is that an issue? I've heard about companies that need 5 years of no traffic violations, clearly I have none but it's because I have no license. I could get one, it's not suspended or anything, but will this be a problem trying to land a job? Thanks!
