Does "racism" exist in the trucking industry?

If there is one thing that has been prevalent in my research it's this:

"Trucking doesn't respect race, religion, sex, sexual-orientation, looks, or birthplace. Trucking is Trucking. Trucking is about getting freight safely from point A to point B in a timely manner and getting paid based on your ability do so efficiently."

You could be a 350 lb. Black, Jewish, Homosexual, woman from the backwoods of Louisiana and make more money than the 180 lb. White, Christian, Straight, Man from Suburbia with 4 years of college under his belt in the truck 2 spaces down.

However, PEOPLE are people. Some have pre-conceived notions and may be racist, sexist, bigoted, supremacists.

The industry as a whole though IMHO is not Racist at all.

They're Coming!

We had a Budweiser truck make its maiden voyage here in Colorado about a month ago. Made it in stellar fashion. Lots of regular drivers weren't very excited about it. Something Cujo'ish about a 18 wheeler humming down the freeway un-attended, even if there was a fella in the cab.

More like "Christine" IMO smile.gif

Lunchbox's Little Adventure

I just signed and submitted my forms for Roehl Transport. Drug Tests came back and I passed (good thing too, I studied hard for those rofl-3.gif ) and now I am Officially starting Company Sponsored Training with Roehl on March 13th, 2017. Thank you everyone for you support and kind words. I am going to do my best to document everything when I get home each night to give everyone here a clear picture of how the CDL training at Roehl in Dallas is. This journey already has been very emotional and it's times like these that just make you feel a great sense of accomplishment.

Negativity in Trucking

I just want to say thank you to each and every member of this site today. I joined a Facebook group a while back and came across something very Disturbing. I would like to share the experience with you guys, as well as pose the question to field a few answers from the wonderful knowledge bank we have (talking about all you wonderful drivers out here).

So a young man posts:

Howdy folks. I'm at a shipper and ran out my clock for the day 15 minutes ago. Getting loaded as I type. What is required for log book entry?

Pretty simple question, and I am sure that the nice folks here would offer some encouraging advice on this subject. The driver went on in the comments to say he is a new driver and hasn't ran across this issue yet.

Some of the responses were:

this is pathetic that a grown person cant get out of this situation on their own, im sorry. we all been there when we were new and probably 100 times since, this isnt rocket science theres plenty of options. trial by fire haha

Or:

Just unplug the Qualcomm go somewhere and replug it back in

And a Myriad of other smart ass comments. So my friends, if this situation were to arise how would you handle it? What steps or measures would/could/should you take to prevent something like this? I know the details surrounding the situation are missing (what time did you get to the shipper? How long have you been in the door? Other things like that.) I know this crew is going to have some much better answers than "chuck your Qualcomm out the window and buy 70 more hours at the nearest truck stop" (buy a paper log book).

Thank you in advance for your time and advice.

Lunchbox's Little Adventure

Well, I am officially 2 weeks out from leaving my current Job to start my Journey to becoming an OTR driver. My replacement starts today and I am excited to help her get trained up. (BTW I gave my boss a heads up 2 weeks before I put in my Formal Resignation, and gave them a month for that). Just by giving them ample time to find and train a replacement has made this professional transition pleasant (I have a very good relationship with my command chain). The time is drawing near and I am starting to slowly pack my bags, making sure that the important things are in my bag and ready to go. By the time I get ready to actually leave, all I should need to do is toss my clothes and toiletries into my duffle and hit the road.

Would it be fair to a company (Swift) to sign on knowing you will only be there 1 year or so

Actually there is ONE company that offers Truly Free CDL training, but you must live in Texas for it. Raider Express. I believe they have a review here on the site.

Physical required sleep study. Now what?

If you keep the 90 day card and go to work for Roehl will you have insurance through the company at that point to cover a study? Ask Roehl about that if you haven't already.

Roehl will not accept a 90 day card for training... you must have a 1 year card at least to enter their training program. This is the current pickle I am in as they want to make sure you are certified as able to drive for the duration of the contract to cover training costs. I have to go back after I accrue 30 days of CPAP compliance as I was only issued a 90 day card. I would suggest looking into Stevens or Prime as they will help you defer the costs of the sleep tests and CPAP machines if they are deemed necessary. Roehl will help with CPAP costs in their program, but that is only after you qualify for their benefits (60 days) and have already obtained a 1 year card to start.
