Hey all,

So the adventure has begun. Left my home in Charleston, SC on Easter Sunday and made my way to Comfort Suites in Stockbridge, GA..

Day 1 (Mon) I arrived at the terminal in Conley, GA the following morning at 6:30 and met my trainer. The first day was pretty much a paperwork drill, agility test and pretty much a "this how Roehl does it" day.

Day 2 (Tue) Arrived at the terminal at 6:30 am and continued with more videos on safety, maps, logs and other administrative type stuff.

Day 3 (Wed) Arrived at the terminal at 6:30 am and discussed pre-trip. We went out to the yard conducted a pre-trip and then began driving the tractor around the yard. This allowed us to get comfortable in the in and around the truck, in the seat and doing a little shifting. After lunch we continued driving but instead of driving in the yard we went out on the road. After a few hours of driving we made our way back to the terminal. I had a lot of fun driving the tractor and look forward to driving more on Day 4.

Day 4 (Thu) Arrived at the terminal at 6:30, discussed the previous day and what the plans were for the current day. We spent most of the day driving around the local area. A lot less grinding of gears when downshifting and no grinding up-shifting. Man, this is fun.

Day 5 (Fri) Arrived at the terminal at 6:30, waited for the sun to come up and conducted pre-tirp. The class was split in two groups of two, each with their own instructor. We hooked up to a trailer and off we went. We spent the morning driving with the trailer then came back to the terminal for lunch. After lunch we watched a few videos on turning and then went back out on the street for a couple more hours. Practically no grinding now; a small victory, me vs. 7th gear!! When we returned to the terminal we watched some videos on backing and did some map exercises. Tomorrow we begin straight backing.

So far I am really enjoying this training. The instructors at Roehl are great! They know what they are talking about, they take the time to answer all our questions and they WANT us to be successful. All the instructors are extremely positive!

"A Texas lawmaker has introduced legislation that would “modernize” current Hours of Service regulations for truck drivers. The bill is known as H.R. 5417, or “The Responsible and Effective Standards for Truckers (REST) Act” was introduced by U.S. Rep Brian Babin. Here’s how the REST Act would change current Hours of Service regulations, according to a press release from Babin’s office: The REST Act would allow drivers to take one rest break per shift, for up to three consecutive hours. The single off-duty period would not be counted toward the driver’s 14-hour, on-duty allowance and would not extent the total, allowable drive limits … The REST Act requires the Department of Transportation to update Hours of Service regulations to allow a rest break once per 14-hour duty period for up to 3 consecutive hours as long as the driver is off-duty, effectively pausing the 14-hour clock. However, drivers would still need to log ten consecutive hours off duty before the start of their next work shift. It would also eliminate the existing 30-minute rest break requirement. The bill states that these changes would “allow professional drivers to rest when they feel it appropriate and avoid congestion, adverse weather conditions, or other road conditions that decrease safety.” Babin, who has previously championed legislation to delay the ELD Mandate, says of the REST Act: “I’m proud to introduce the REST Act today and give America’s truckers the options they need to safely operate under today’s rigid federal regulations. This bill is an important step in making the way for improved highway safety. It would also eliminate the existing 30-minute rest break requirement.“"

I’m very excited and a little apprehensive however; going into this career with the correct mindset as you noted is key.

I always go direct to the forum, so I forgot what the earlier Home Page was like.

The top is very plain (grey with a blue bar). How about a trucking photo in the background? Also the anonymous three bars at the top left are really a gateway to the whole web site. A little arrow with "Click here for more" to get all the resources to pop out.

To help people (nowadays they may have a short attention span) get down the page, a list of page links at the top with the section titles to click on that will drop the visitor down to topics. This also hints at the vast resources we offer.

Final note: there is a "Apply For Paid CDL Training" blocks at both the top and bottom. Too much?

The only thing I would say is to remove the "Apply For Paid CDL Training" from the top of the page. The Home Page and forum itself are great!

Hey all, Just a quick hello. I begin training with Roehl in Conley, GA on 2 Apr 18 and will be a solo driver in their dry van division.

I have been navigating through this site and have found many useful posts. I wish I found this site before taking the test for my CLP!!
