Serious Backing Skills Needed Here

I am truely amazed..and to think I had a rookie breakdown moment having to do a drop off in Downtown LA where i had to blind side back off a two lane street into a receiver with two small docks that dipped underground. This is why I love this Forum. When I think things are bad I can always come here for an attitude adjustment, just by looking at what you guys go through on daily basis. This is the reality of Trucking. Thanks for Sharing!

Who's going swift

Congrats on going to Swift. I graduated from Fontana and been solo for about 3 months now. You would love the Utah Terminal. In fact I love that terminal better than the HQ in Phoenix. I wish you all the best and I cant wait to hear about your progress.

(News Item) - Largest ELD Provider CRASHES - Forcing Drivers Onto Paper Logs - Driver's for Swift and Schneider are just some of the drivers affected.

I am a Swift Driver and this is happening to me right now. A bit frustrating but they are working as fast as they can to get it back working properly.

Toughest day on the road?

Thanks bre. Did you have to wait long in the yard? Or did they get it done quickly?

Yeah i had to wait a long time Only because the load was delivered late (not my fault customer requested monday delivery and i was dispatched on the load wednesday) and the dock worker took his time on "lunch". Once he got to it he unloaded me super quick.

Toughest day on the road?

I know i have many more days to come since im a brand new solo driver, my toughest day would have to be my first day out. I had a 3 stop live unloads, with my final stop being in South San Francisco. The general area of the location where i delivered too was not 53ft trailer friendly. After having to maneuver my way into the parking lot, the dock was really small so i had to dock my trailer at 90° angle and after i was done i had to back into the street because there was no place for me to turn around. I was sweating bullets all day.

Drivers who speed up when you Pass

I dont understand the logic behind that either. When i see i have trucks behind me, i either slow down a little and turn my flashers in hopes of letting them know its ok to pass or pull into a turnout and let traffic pass. I try to be as courteous as possible. Ive only been out solo for 3 months and i see this alot. Im just not the one to speed up if a truck is trying to pass.

My tightest backing yet

Great Job! Let me say if that were me because im still fairly new and lack confidence in my backing skills..i wouldnt be able to do it by myself. It amazes me seeing you guys and how you guys maneuver to get backed into places. I hope i get as good as you guys one day.

How long before I am asigned a mentor at Swift?

I finished orientation at Jurupa last week, and have been waiting for a mentor since last Friday. Does it usually take this long? The only request that I made was for non-smoker. I know there are many variables.

I went through the academy and orientation of out jurupa valley in may and It took me about a week to get a mentor. Keep checking with driver qualifications and also if possible answer a phone number you may not recognize. My mentor called me directly. Best of luck to you.
