Experienced local driver considering CRE OTR Dollar Tree position

I'm going to chime in with a hair under 3 years OTR experience. I know I am good at what I do. I can get my trailer into places I would never have dreamed of, on day 1 of my career. Would I take a Dollar Route? Nope. No way in heck. I kind of glance at the DG parking lots as I go by, and most of the time, it's a "nope" followed by "how in the world......"

I'm not saying that it can't be done, as there is ONE member on here who started on a Dollar Route and was very successful. I know even at this point in my driving career, it could still be a career killer.

Good luck and keep us posted. TT is a good place for research and finding answers.

Un-Constitutional Medical Intervention

Here's the thing. If you have certain co-morbitites, the "likelihood" that you also have sleep apnea exists. Medical examiners have the right to see your answers to on your health screening form, and can investigate further before signing their name to your medical card.

Take the sleep study. You won't even know for sure, until you actually have the test.

The threshold for Apnea Hypopnoea Index that is "ok" without treatment is AHI of 5.0. what that means, is your body has stopped breathing, and startled you, on average, of 5 times per hour. That's actually a lot. That's about 40 times in a single night.

I feel like you are being disingenuous in your statement about falling asleep in your chair being the reason. Those questions are part of the EPWORTH sleep scale, and scores you based on your own answers.

FYI, it can be found here.

It is not discrimination to see if someone who is in control of 80k lbs is getting correct sleep. It's not a scam. It's not a money grab. It is literally checking to see if a driver is jolted out of the sleep cycle more than 40 times a night. Ya know, so they are actually well rested, and not going to have something causing them to fall asleep at the wheel.

I am not able to perform 90 degree blindside backing, AT ALL

I am not able to perform 90 degree blindside backing, AT ALL

Also of note, once I started asking myself this question during a GOAL, suddenly backing became way easier.

"If I continue exactly what I am doing right now, where will the trailer get in trouble (hit something) FIRST?"

This is the exact reason I take issue with a "parking formula" style of teaching a backing maneuver. The formula only works 100 percent of the time, in very controlled situations. You aren't really learning the finessing you will need to adapt and correct mid maneuver.

Hopefully the tips from Erroll will assist you getting the hang of it. When I'm tired and cranky, blindsiding becomes my own personal hell, and I'll GOAL way more than someone else would, just because I know what conditions make blindsiding more difficult for me.

Don't give up on yourself. Sometimes, the simple act of a GOAL where you slowly walk fully around truck and trailer is enough of a brain pause to get you out of the negative feedback loop we can get caught in.

Don't touch another driver's equipment

Interesting that the replies were way different when I spoke up about keeping your hands off someone else's equipment.

Run it or wait it out?

My kid lives in Great Falls Montana, and he is already sick of the negative temps! He misses the "Balmy" Hamilton MT where there was maybe 15 days a year sub zero!

My written QC response would be: "Those other drivers aren't going to be sitting next to me in a courtroom. I am not moving due to the weather and my and motoring public's safety. I am currently in safe and legal parking, and will check again in X hours, and reevaluate and update at that time. "

Luckily even my miserable twit of a FM wouldn't argue with me when I brought out words that had she pushed could get her in trouble
