A supervisor a few years back suggested I consider a career in truck driving, since I enjoy driving and it pays well. I thought about it but thought I couldn't since I have insulin-dependent diabetes. Long story short, I decided to actually start looking into it and discovered I could get a federal exemption. Eight long months later I finally finished going through the tedious process of getting an exemption. After a few months of thinking about it, I finally took the leap and signed up for company-sponsored training with Swift. The rest is history!

Hotels... how often do you stay in them?
Thanks for pointing out that hotel! I found it right away when I looked it up on google maps.
I just started doing OTR again a couple months ago and so far I’ve stayed in a hotel for the weekend once for a 34. I think I might do it about once a month. It is nice to get out of the truck every so often

I single-handedly ruined my life trying to transition into trucking
Hey Dre, my email is in my bio. If you shoot me an email I’d be happy to send you my number and coach you over the phone any time you have questions about securement. I don’t claim to know even close to everything about flatbed but I have been doing it for a while and have hauled a good variety of loads. You’re also welcome to post pics of loads on the forum if you have questions about your securement.
Also, in the green book (the FMCSR) section 393.100-393.136 is your best friend as a flatbedder. Read it, study it, internalize it. If you do that, you will be light years ahead of most newbies.
Finally, while we are happy to help, I would encourage you to find out what support structure western express has for their new flatbed drivers as that will be the easiest and most direct route for you to get any and all help you may need.

Some Minor Layoffs In Trucking
SPD runs me very well so far, granted I’ve only been here for two months. We have aerospace contracts that keep us moving. We'll see how long that all lasts though if Boeing doesn’t start gluing their planes together better lol

Rest Areas / Truck Stops Full - Eclipse!
I was in Utah yesterday when it happened and you couldn’t even tell since it was only a partial eclipse. It was still super bright out. I took a pic with my phone and that was the only way I was able to tell. If you look closely you can see where it must have reflected on one of the lenses or something, showing a much clearer picture of the eclipse.
On a more random note, took this pic at the Loves in Brigham City yesterday and thought it looked kinda cool with the mountains in the back

Question about the DOT physical
I feel your pain. Unfortunately you’re in the position of needing to do the physical at the location they specify or choosing another employer who doesn’t require a physical from a specific doctor.
Most companies I’ve worked for did not care where I got my physical.

Drive schedule to fit in April 8th solar eclipse?
I’m kinda sad I’ll miss it. I’m in PA right now but I should be in Utah or Idaho by the time of the eclipse

Is a TWIC card worth it?
It’s worth it to have if your company ever goes to the ports and especially if your company pays for it. Once you have it it’s good for several years and even if you use it only once it basically pays for itself.
