Ok i may be wrong but from what Ive read is you go to their school and they train you to get the CDL permit right ? Then you go with a trainer and run team to train ?

Does that mean you are driving while the trainer is sleeping if so doesn't that break the law reading my manual it says the CDL license holder must be in the co pilot seat

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

They can't legally run team until you have passed your CDL road test and are licensed. Some will try to get you licensed in the first week or two so they can run up the miles and make more money on you "training" you.

Ok, the way that Prime does their training is this, you will go with an instructor until you test out and get your CDL-A. During that time, yes they will be in the passenger seat anytime you are in the drivers seat.

Now during the second phase of training (TNT phase for Prime), you will be driving while your trainer is in the sleeper, but they will only be a shout away should you need/require any assistance. At this point you are a licensed CDL holder and your trainer is not required to be in the jump seat while you are driving.

Not sure how most do this phase, but when I was training I took the first 1 to 2 weeks of basically doing a modified training sometimes in the jump seat, sometimes in the sleeper. I was observing all your moves, asking questions and making sure that you were somewhat comfortable driving by yourself before I went into full blown team status. Even after we went into team driving, I was always checking up on you to make sure you were alright. I was always just a shout away should you need anything. I very rarely slept with the curtain closed during the first few weeks that way you never knew if I was sitting up watching or was sleeping. I slept very light/little during this time because I knew it was a very nervous time for you.

So to recap, yes during the PSD (permit holder time) your instructor is required to be in the jump seat while you drive. During the TNT phase, you are a licensed driver and not longer is the trainer required to be in the jump seat at that point.

Hope this clears things up for you as far as how the training is done at Prime.
