I'm thinking about getting a dog soon here to travel with after I get my cdl the company I'm going to work for will have me on the road a few days and for the companionship and guarding of my truck would it be smart to get a dog? Just curious how people with experience feel on the subject.

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.

I got a pit on the truck with me. I couldn't imagine a better temperament. I really don't care for the yap dogs. He snoozes most of the time. I take him out for a bathroom break about half as often as I go. The cooler weather makes him goofy outside. It makes him act like a puppy.

The shedding is terrible though. Getting the short hair out of the upholstery is a chore.

Personally I wouldn't get a dog just to have companionship and protection on the road. If you already had a dog you didn't want to part with that would be different. But getting one for the road could be far more of a burden than a help.

Most companies don't allow pets and the ones that do tend to have rather restrictive policies on the type of pet. They also require quite a large deposit which you may or may not get back and often there are other fees and restrictions involved.

My exwife and I had our small dog with us in the truck the entire time we worked for U.S.Xpress Wichita was over 10 years they never had a problem with it but it will depend on the company you go to work for but as Brett said you really won't need to get a dog for protection we get a bad wrap as a whole out here but for the most part truckers are good people but I wouldn't go out and buy a dog for just the companionship go to your local pound and adopt

I agree with Brett. If you already had a dog you didn't want to part with that would be different, but getting one for the road could be much more of a pain than you'd think.

Especially if it doesn't work out.

I wouldnt take a big dog on any truck... Almost if not all big dogs need a lot of running room and keeping them in a walkin closet is doing more harm then good... MHO
