Pedestrian crushed trying to walk under big-rig trailer

A 47-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries when he tried to walk under the trailer of a turning big-rig in the South of Market area in San Francisco, police said Monday.

The incident happened just before 1 a.m. Sunday at Howard and Fremont streets.

Police said a semi-truck with two trailers was making a turn at the intersection. Instead of waiting for the truck to pass, the pedestrian attempted to walk under the rear trailer and was hit and dragged a short distance, police said.

The truck driver stopped and remained at the scene. The injured man suffered a crushed leg and other critical injuries. He was being treated at San Francisco General Hospital.

It remained unclear Monday why the man tried to walk under the trailer.

Watch how people drive under normal, everyday conditions and you'll be scratching your head every 5 minutes trying to figure out why people would take the risks they take. Serious bummer that happened to him. Probably one heck of a nightmare the driver will have to live with too even though it doesn't appear to have been his fault.

The man was either HIGH AS A KITE, or loves to take risk.

Like NEVER try passing a truck when he's making a right turn!!! Guy I went all thru school with from 2nd grade, into high school, made this mistake..... Riding his motorcycle, no helmet (before the law in Calif).....He only made that mistake ONCE! He literally "lost his head" Something I'll never forget ouch!

The guy was "walking" which probably means (IMHO) that he was trying to "catch a ride," by surfing the trailer.

It is probably a variation of "bumper surfing."
