Hmmm as a mother of 4, my thoughts are that at that age they are way too irresponsible. It's called the stupidity factor. My 18 year old who is extremely intelligent does incredibly stupid things for example. So much so, I don't allow him to even drive a 4 wheeler at this time. That would be irresponsible on my part. My 16 year old is much more reliable at this point in time, however, just as my son did.. in another year or so she'll probably get a case of the stupid too, for a few years. I hope not, but it happens.

My grown children who are now 28 and 29.. yes, they too did incredibly dumb things at 18, 19, etc. It's the nature of the beast lol. Of course not all teens are like this.. that you know of.

Some states are looking at an INTRASTATE age of 19. I also read a while back where Iowa and Nebraska were looking at an age 19 CDL.

Dave

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Intrastate:

The act of purchasers and sellers transacting business while keeping all transactions in a single state, without crossing state lines to do so.

18 year old idiocy is a common problem.... let me say first I have alot of experience in dealing with this age group as my former job was a manager at Gamestop..... there is an 18 year old ( 19 in december) in my class ....in Canada there is no age limit for driving across Canada however we still have to respect the US laws once we cross so driving in the US just isnt going to happen.... we have recruiters come in and even though this has been explained to this person each and every day..... he asks each recruiter if they will allow him to drive in the US.....I agree with Mothertrucker here @ 18 you are just not ready.... of course there will be someone who will be the exception to the rule .... be that guy if you are in classes you will save the rest of us a number of "OMFG just shut the heck up kid "moments I went so far as to today bring him a list of jobs that he would be accepted to and may actually give him a chance as its obvious his mom is not that interested... Side note ... telling a recruiter what a great driver you are because you drive 150km/hr 80-90 every day as you oversleep for work.....probably not helpful....lol yes that was the kids story today

It won't make much of a difference where they set the minimum age if insurance companies won't allow carriers to hire from that age group anyhow. And that's exactly the case today. Most carriers won't even hire someone at 21 years old though they legally can. At most companies the minimum age is anywhere from 22-25 because that's what the insurance companies dictate.

So even if they lower the minimum age for interstate driving from 21 down to 19 or 18 I don't believe there will be many takers.

Is there any way I can follow this more? As a few of you may know, I will be 18 next year and am still looking to get my CDL as soon as possible. Right now I'm just trying to find a regular job to pay for it, so I might not be going to school for another year or 2 or so. However, I'd still like to stay on top of this - if an opportunity would open up for me to get it, I'd like to know if I can go interstate. There's one thing about the bill that I'm unsure about and that's the proposed pilot program for drivers under 21. I haven't been able to find information on it or see if it's still being proposed.

About the bill itself... I'd like to see it regulated. If they're allowing under-21s to drive, they should be monitored or not allowed to run OTR until they've proven themselves safe. Stick to shorter regional loads for a few months. Heck, if there is a chance for me to get interstate clearance before I'm 21, I'd like to stay with a company close to home that runs through bordering states, NOT OTR, even though that's ultimately my goal. I do not consider myself an "idiot" at this age and yes I know so many people my age who are idiots. There's a stereotype here, it's just hard to weed through the stereotypical candidates to find a few that actually care enough to be safe drivers and put in the effort.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
