I joined the site over a year ago and having been studying it religiously. This time last year I was litterly hours away from stepping on the bus heading towards CR England when my better judgement told me not to. I'm glad I had listen to my gut as my life has changed for the better since then. However recently I was laid off as a operations manager for a big box store and entertained the thought of driving, just with a different company. Next Friday I'll be getting on a bus headed for Prime. I don't think I've ever been this Nervous before but I am excited as well. Still trying to figure out how I keep my relationship with my loving Girlfriend going. It will be a challenge for both of us I know. Any advice you guys and gals could offer a newbie to the trucking world would be terrific.

If you have a strong relationship, and she is onboard with the training and Otr life, then you should be ok. If not, then idk

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

It's much like military service in that you are gone a lot. You know why you're doing it and you are going with a good company. She is either with you or not. All you can do is love her as much as possible in the time you have together and remind her of that whenever you talk.

From the road use FaceTime when you can or Skype. Save your money and do something special each time you are home.

Good luck and Prime is a great choice. Believe in yourself, we do.

The best thing you can do is don't sit around on the couch watching tv when your home. When your home you are home and your attention should be on her. You may find it difficult going out when you spent weeks on the road and you just want to get cozy in your house. Instead go out with her, she will appreciate it! Just my 2 cents.

I fully agree with the above comments, but will add become a good listner. When your on the road she is dealing with all the day to day business at home. She will at times feel overwhelmed. She will tell you all about it and the best thing you can do is listen. Don't talk shop with her. She won't understand it and probably isn't interested too much anyway. Just hesring her out will pay off big.

Steve mentioned Facetime & Skype. Great as far as that goes, but you need to make a point to call daily.

On the road your "call-able" time might not match up, but, of nothing else, pull over in a safe spot for 10 minutes.
