I passed my physical for my Dot Medical Certificate, but the Dr. only gave me a one year card.

I am 270lbs at 6'1", and he wanted me to lose some weight before he issued a two year card.

I'm not on any medication, otherwise I'm perfectly healthy. And, yes, I'm currently trying to exercise and eat better to lose that weight.

My question is, will only having a one year card effect a companies decision to hire me?

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

I don't see why he gave you a one year. I want to school with a guy who was 6'2 over 300 and he was given a two year for card

Thanks for your reply.

I'm asking because I was looking up reviews of different companies, and one person said that one of the reasons he was let go from a company was that their company doctors wouldn't except his one year medical certificate. Also, he said that the one year DOT certificate wasn't valid for interstate travel, you needed a two year certificate to drive interstate with that company.

It struck me as really odd.

I haven't read anything like that in my studying for the written test, but I just wanted to make sure. I wouldn't want to spend the money for driving school just to be told I couldn't be an interstate driver because I only held a 1 year DOT card.

A one year medical card will not restrict a driver from interstate trucking. Totally false.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but it's free to ask dumb questions, especially when you're just starting out.

Man, so much misinformation out there, lol

It's not a"dumb question" if you need to double-check information found on the internet. I was hired at Swift with a 1 year, and my re-up was a1 year also. I, too an considered overweight, and "everything else" is OK.

I don't understand how that is possible, how can a company just decide your qualification isn't valid? Isn't a DOT physical valid regardless of what company you work for?
