Growing Plants

I imagine this might be a very bizarre thread but here goes.

For the past two months I have been growing plants from seeds for my wife. The entire project costs roughly 10$. 5$ for pot and 5$ for soil, and the seeds are like .30c.

I wanted to try it out. I was always a mini-farmer as a kid and I grew my own strawberry plants - I even named them too! I was thinking one day of how to reward my wife for her loyalty and for sticking with me through all this. Jewelry? Too expensive. State souvenirs? Boring. I wanted to do something unique. So I bought a 12" diameter pot and some miracle-grow soil.

The last plants I grew were Forget-Me-Nots and my wife almost cried when I surprised her with them. I've noticed that this yields many positive effects for me, it's a win/win.

Here's a list of the benefits that I have experienced:

It gives you a sense of accomplishment. You wake up everyday in the morning and you see your bright green, beautiful plants. They get bigger every night. It gives you something to do, something to take care of. It really takes some stress away, I know this sounds weird but ever since I started I've just been a happier person. I know I sound like a total loser.

When I'm parked and its sunny outside I put the plants on top of my hood. They lean up against my windshield so they can't fall. I get a lot of people walking and stopping to stare. Rare sight I guess. It doesn't create any mess in my truck because the pot is built with a large tray that holds the drained water.

So to anyone with a wife or girlfriend. Try this for a month. It's very easy and it's very rewarding. truck driver growing plants in the cab of his truck

It doesn't sound like you are total loser at all. I think it is a great idea. It makes me smile to read that you love your woman that much.

My hat is off to you.

When I first read your post, my mind went back to a Class B horror movie from years ago. I don't remember the name, but it was about human eating plants. I had to laugh when it came to mind.

Not only does growing make you feel better. With the right kind of plants, it will also help the truck to smell better and have a better atmosphere. Not saying your truck sticks. I hope you know what I mean. smile.gif

Keep it up. I will probably follow suit when I get my own truck.

Keep it safe out there. Joe S

You need to try growing herbs !!! talk about making your truck smell better !!! I kept a mint plant in our truck...TSB thought I'd gone over the proverbial edge until I'd set it in the sun, and that wonderful smell would fill the truck... AND your wife can make use of mint...you can dry the leaves, or drop one in your tea. Mint is very medically beneficial...it helps with sinus problems from allergies, its a natural soothing herb for the tummy, and it cleans the air ( don't ask me how..I don't know, I just know it does). Theres other herbs that will grow well in a contained area. Lavender also is a nice plant to start. But if you want to really make your wife smile..try to find her a Rebel Star Jasmine plant. I got mine from a WalMart in NM, but they use them as hedges in CA. Talk about a lovely smell...they bloom little white waxy flowers that will fill up the truck, or a room with a wonderful scent. I doubt you can get a seed for them, but I know you can get the little plants. They are a woody plant, so you may be able to propagate a cutting...thats something you may want to get into. My dad liked to work in woody plants, and taught me to weave bushes, and braid trees...It makes outstanding ornamental yard plants..I can tell you how its done, it your interested... its fun !!

That's a great idea about the mint. Fantastic idea! I'm a huge tea addict. I probably have 10 different boxes of tea in my truck right now. We Russians are born to love tea haha! I will definitely look into that! Thanks

Hey, I don't think you sound like a loser either - I love plants! I raise a few types of animals and have a huge garden way out here in the country and I totally dig what you're saying. Plants in the truck can make a huge difference in the feel of it. It brings life into the truck, the colors and fantastic, and it's a great little hobby to enjoy when it's time to get your mind off of trucking. Plants are so relaxing to have around.

I think it's a very cool idea. smile.gif

Thanks. Yeah I'm good on the plants but I'm still working on getting some animals in here. I wouldn't mind a chicken or a piglet. I can't convince my wife to come as a passenger with me anymore but if I bring a cute little piglet she will definitely come along! good-luck-2.gif

Awesome idea. And the name of the movie is "Little Shop of Horrors". A cult classic staring Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, John Candy, and many others.

Daniel a fellow Russian on TT! Small world lol. I think growing plants in the truck is a good idea I was thinking about it myself a few days ago. How do you keep the soil from spilling out of the pot from the vibration?

Buy one of those pots that are designed for you to water the plant from the bottom instead of the top. It acts like a pot and collects all the dropping water from the soil. Time it when you water it. For example, don't water it before driving. Water it just when you're done driving and give it 10 minutes for the water to go down and then just spill out the water. Water will spill out occasionally but really not much. Every Walmart has them in either fan or green color. You can't miss them.
