When doing my trailer/parking brakes check and it is time to check my parking brake and trailer brake, should I have the truck in first gear when giving it a tug for these exercises?

So if I leave it in neutral, the trailer won't tug at all?

We were actually told to use second because you can break the drive shaft using first. But who knows, maybe a drive shaft broke exactly once and someone decided they needed a new company policy.
