That is an interesting way to get a year intrastate driving, which is nearly as good as otr experience. And I, like so many would have never thought of doing cdl thru a landscaping business. I know that I just had a friend go to work at a rental outfit, that has drop decks. And they deliver the big equipent that is rented out, and sometimes he is hired to run it (which is what he did for alot of years, before the job collapse). So he's stoked, he eventually want to go otr, but went to a private school that had no ties to trucking companies. Now he will have his experience and have fun getting it !!

Hi everyone, new to the forum. I think I have only posted once, been reading and perusing for awhile though. What an excellent positive resource for new drivers! A little about me, i started driving straight tandem dumps in 1984, I think I drove for the first six months with only a basic car license! Back then you had to have a chauffeurs and if I remember right it was a class d. Moved on from their to semi dumps, flats and RGN, all local no OTR experience, I'm fascinated though. I see myself pulling a flatbed around OTR after the kids are out of school. Anyways somewhere along the line I got involved in landscaping and have been a scaper for the last seventeen years.
Finally to my point, many companies in the landscape industry are in need of drivers, and willing to give someone right out of school with a cdl , a chance at getting some experience. Its hard work, you're always up and down off the truck and trailer, sometimes a dozen times a day, strapping, chaining and tarping. Most companies run single or tandem dumps with a 18 or 20 foot flatbed trailer, although I've seen some of the bigger companies running semi dumps and flats even a RGN. Sitting in front of a prospective employer with a year or so of this kind of experience would help anyones chances, especially if they are looking to get into flatbedding or heavy haul. Could be a good way for some to get some meat into their resume. Something to think about. Keep it safe out there and have a great weekend everybody!
CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Tandem:
Tandem Axles
A set of axles spaced close together, legally defined as more than 40 and less than 96 inches apart by the USDOT. Drivers tend to refer to the tandem axles on their trailer as just "tandems". You might hear a driver say, "I'm 400 pounds overweight on my tandems", referring to his trailer tandems, not his tractor tandems. Tractor tandems are generally just referred to as "drives" which is short for "drive axles".
