Will this fact be a deterrent to hiring companies? I have a long list of previous jobs in different career's. I have a clean driving history and have driven in Chicago for 7 years with no accidents or any violations. I love to drive and am good at it. But my vocational rehabilitation person asked me if I'm really going to stick with this because I'm getting a grant to go to CDL school and it's a lot of money to be receiving to change my mind half way in.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Jacinda, there are several reasons someone may job hop. You don't provide more information about who and why.

I could see the kind of work that comes in several short gigs, or that you are looking for a good career "fit". Just don't explain the many jobs by saying you were treated unfairly in most of the situations.

Thanks Errol, it was due to trying to please other people which I've done a lot. Recently however, I realize I need to be my own advocate and go for it what ever that is!

As long as you DOCUMENT ALL your jobs (including gaps in employment) - it shouldn't be an issue. They key is - why you left. If you got FIRED (especially for misconduct), this could be an issue when your references are checked.

How much DID you hop around?

Younger folks with no degrees or significant vocational training - tend to move around a bit until they find a fit for themselves.

I worked at gas stations, drive a cab, tried my hand at being an auto mechanic, worked the counter at an ice cream restaurant - and a whole bunch of other gigs - before joining the Navy at 19. I've been on my own doing computers for the last 37 years (the last 15 with my own corporation).

Most people here, would agree with your vocational counselor - are you READY TO MAKE A COMMITMENT? Most folks here will tell you to stick with it for AT LEAST A YEAR - before you decide whether or not it's for you.

Rick
